Test drive multiple cars. Don’t just take one 3000GT out and then buy it. Test drive as many 3000GTs as you can get your hands on. This will give you a good idea of what makes a good and what makes a bad 3000GT. If the car is running a SOHC power unit, it is usually fine when the timing belt breaks but we always recommend that the recommended service intervals are adhered to. While performing a compression test is a good way to work out whether there are any problems with the engine, some owners will be reluctant to let you take their car’s engine to pieces (understandably so). Examining the exterior, I am very impressed with the front air intake. It is generous and it closes with a vertical cover. Use your thumb push down the cover to open, and your index finger to close—at least that is how I do it. I can easily open and close the front air vent with my FirstGear heated gloves on. The same goes for the top vent—very positive movement.
To work out whether you are looking at a 3000GT or a GTO, you can look at the vin/chassis number. The chassis number on Japanese GTOs will always start with Z16A or Z15A, while 3000GTs will begin with something like JMAMNZ16A and be followed by numbers.
