Description

The best shoes in the Under Armour lineup fall into two categories–everyday training shoes (including new models for trail running, like the Hovr Speed) and racing shoes. UA shoes can be a bit divisive—the brand gets routinely dragged by users on the Running Shoe Geeks subreddit because of the poor performance of its first running designs. Other brands, like Asics, New Balance, and Hoka, use different midsole materials that create a similarly soft, pillowy feel. Generally speaking, you won’t get that sensation with Under Armour shoes. It also boasts a wide and roomy toe box that is perfect for most runners and prevents your toes from jamming at the end of the shoe.

Not much has changed between the midsole of the Infinite 1 and the 3. As in the first version, the midsole is entirely HOVR foam, and fully connected, with the embedded chip. While limited changes were made to this part of the shoe, it does its job very well, so why fix what isn’t broken? The HOVR remains perfectly plush, without feeling like you’re losing too much energy to the shoe. It’s an ideal ride for that 8 K you have to do after work – when you want to feel like your legs are recovering, not doing too much work.

If you love your neutral trainers to be impossibly light and bright along the top of your foot, the added padding may slow you down a bit. The price you pay for this protection is extra weight, less breathability and a higher price. However, your feet will thank you on those occasions when the grey clouds gather and the rains come down.

When you get home from your run, the chip automatically uploads your performance data to your phone, and with a UA app, it can even offer insights and running suggestions. It’s super comfortable, lightweight, and the mesh upper works to keep feet cool and dry. You can pair this information to any health app on your phone, or Map My Run. These apps gather the information from your run and give you insights on your progress, and suggestions on how to improve.

Take your sport seriously? You’ll be spending a lot of time in your shoes - so you’re gonna need footwear that lasts. Under Armour HOVR™ is our proprietary midsole system - that’s the part between your foot and the outsole grip that touches the floor. UA HOVR™ trainers give you incredible levels of bounce and energy return, the cushioning maintains its shape way longer than traditional foams, and it’s incredibly durable. The Hovr Phantom used to be Under Armour’s max-cushion shoe, but the Mega 3 has eclipsed it. This plush trainer features even more midsole foam than the Phantom, along with a new Clone upper. If you want all the padding, the Mega 3 Clone has it. The underside of the Flow layer has an undulating pattern of grooves that reliably grip the road. And, in standard Under Armour fashion, it’s durable enough to withstand repeated impacts, so the shoe won’t wear down after a few miles, unlike most shoes with exposed midsoles. That means there’s no need for a separate, heavy outsole, which shaves off considerable weight.

Hovr is Under Armour’s latest midsole material, an attempt at a high energy-return foam that’s all the rage in running shoes right now. In this case, UA is using an extremely soft material surrounded by an “energy web,” to give you a soft landing that remains as protective at the end of your run as it did at the start. The brand has visibly called out this tech via cutout windows in the midsole, much like what Nike did in the early days of Air. Gaps of Hovr foam peek out of (and even poke through) cutouts in the sidewall of the firmer carrier foam. I also love that this shoe boasts a nice and wide toe box that allows your toes plenty of room to splay for added stability. It’s important to note that as a daily trainer, many runners found that this shoe is just a little bit on the bulky side. And, as always, you can count on Under Armour’s signature durability. I’ve had mine for months, and the outsole rubber shows only minimal wear. While it’s not a supremely bouncy trainer, it has plenty of cushioning and staying power for daily training runs. Finally, the outsole is made from a combination of lightweight blown rubber and tough carbon rubber. The blown rubber reduces weight, while the carbon rubber, placed under the heel, adds durability where you need it most. Both materials are scored with grooves, boosting the shoe’s flexibility. If you love a plush step-in feel, you are sure to fall in love with the feel of the UA HOVR Infinite 3. It is composed of a nice and comfy HOVR midsole material that feels squishy under your feet which makes it perfect for running long distances. While the feel of this midsole is soft, it doesn’t muddy your gait cycle.

On the bottom, the segmented rubber outsole keeps the shoe flexible—no clunky strides here—and carbon rubber placements under the heel add durability. Compared to the rest of the UA lineup, the Mega 3 dials up the cushioning, and it’ll treat your feet to a plush ride on your next training run. Road running UA HOVR™ trainers like the Sonic 6, Machina 3 or Infinite 5 give your feet serious protection, stride after stride after stride. Trail running and hiking UA HOVR™ shoes protect your feet from harsh surfaces and return energy. UA HOVR™ golf shoes use the system to support the natural motion of your foot during a golf swing, and eliminate impact on your joints. UA HOVR™ trainers for gym sessions use the system to protect you from dynamic leaps, sprints and reps. The Hovr Machina 3 Clone is a step up from its predecessors. Its redesigned midsole features two types of Hovr foam: A firmer version in the forefoot, and softer one in the heel. The combination creates strong impact absorption on landing and more lively toe-offs. That said, don’t expect a super bouncy shoe–the Machina felt decidedly firm in my testing. One of the features that I love most about this shoe is that it has a built-in microchip that connects easily to your phone. And just like Under Armour’s other running shoes, the Elite’s Flow midsole is designed to be durable, so there’s no need for a separate rubber outsole. Cutting the rubber out of the design makes the shoe substantially lighter, giving it an edge over racers from other brands (including the Endorphin Elite and the Vaporfly). The ultralight upper on top provides a close wrap around the foot and maximum breathability, so your feet stay cool even when you’re really cranking. The Velociti Wind 2 won praise from RW testers for its surprising durability and grip, and this new, updated design retains those attributes. The shoe still has a full-length layer of Flow cushioning, but it’s tweaked to be even softer and lighter, according to Under Armour. The sole has pronounced toe spring, where the sole curves upward off the ground under your toes, which helps you roll smoothly from landing to toe-off. It’s topped off with a knit upper that boasts good breathability and creates a secure fit. Overall, I would recommend this running shoe for those that like to go on nice and easy tempo runs or like to run for long distances. The build of the insanely durable outsole also makes this shoe great for those that have a heavy stride. Overall, runners felt like this style of midsole material helps to keep their gait cycle nice and bright, while the full-length midsole helps to absorb the impact when running on hard surfaces to protect your legs and joints. The Clone upper stretches and contracts to match the shape of your feet, even as they swell up over the course of your run, so you get a snug fit that won’t feel constricting on longer efforts. The upper also features a rigid external heel counter that supports your heel and ankle, so the shoe won’t feel wobbly when cornering or running across uneven ground.
