In Toy Story 2, when Woody uses his pull-string to swing from the airplane onto Bullseye, none of his phrases are heard when the string retracts. However in the Toy Story 2 Video game cutscene, the phrase "Yee-haw!" is heard. This is also a reference to the first Toy Story video game where Woody could use his pull-string to swing across hazards using nearby hooks. Passing through a playground on the way, Woody ends up grabbed by a child who also happens to have Bo Peep in hand, and the two toys meet again for the first time in nine years. At first opportunity, Bo grabs Woody and they sneak away into the brush. There, a mobile toy car disguised as a skunk rushes at Woody and nearly runs him over, and it is revealed that Bo's sheep were driving, and although they are happy to see Woody, he doesn't remember their names or gender. Later builds have an improved face sculpt, resembling the newer Thinkway Toys versions, as well as a thinner body.

When Bonnie's family decides to go on a vacation, he finds his long-lost girlfriend, Bo Peep. He decides he will remain with Bo Peep and help lost toys find new owners. Since his debut, Woody has received largely positive reception from reviewers due to his character's arc and personality, as well as Tom Hanks' vocal performance.Woody is similar to Baloo from The Jungle Book in the sense that both have a special friend who is a boy (Andy for Woody; Mowgli for Baloo), at one point argued with another character about having to part with him (Buzz for Woody; Bagheera for Baloo), and finally let the special friend go in the end, feeling sad but knowing it's for the best. While Woody is trying to save another toy from being sold at Andy's family yard sale, Al McWhiggin, a toy collector, spots Woody and steals him to bring him to his apartment. At Al's apartment, Woody discovers his past and legacy as the star of a 1950s Western children's show titled Woody's Roundup. It starred Stinky Pete the Prospector, cowgirl Jessie, and Woody's horse Bullseye. Woody learns that he and the other Roundup toys are going to be shipped to Japan by Al to be displayed in a toy museum, which will only accept the collection if Woody is in it.
