About this deal

I had so many conflicting opinions about the relationships in this one. I hate love triangles, but this one didn't really feel like one because it was so obvious that Autumn loved Finn and that something was gonna come out of that, but I also really liked her and Jamie.

Oh wait, I'm not done.) If He Had Been with Me's premise was so interesting. We already knew how it ended, but we didn't know the journey to the end. But, alas, the premise doesn't live up to the book. Also, I totally guessed that she was gonna get pregnant with his baby. Not surprising in the least and felt more like a letdown than anything. Character-wise? This book landed right on the mark. The characters felt unique, well thought out, and completely individualistic when it came to quirks, emotions, and driving forces. Autumn was well-written even if she was a bit annoying at times. Finn, of course, was my favorite. Because, of course, the nice, shy, cutesy guy is my favorite. I love a dude who blushes. This sweet, authentic love story masks complex characters dealing with complex issues: single parents, divorce, only children yet ersatz siblings; high school, college, the pull of the clique; love, friendship, sex, and teen pregnancy . . . First-time author Nowlin keeps the story real and fast paced, avoiding the melodramatic." — Booklist Finny confronts her why she left him so suddenly and she apologises, says she was stupid and selfish. They talk about it and finally kiss. They kiss like long lost lovers and they make love. So desperate that they go without protection.

They were arguing. No one ever says what they were arguing about. It is, in other people's opinions, not important to the story. What they do not know is that there is another story. The story lurking underneath and in between the facts of the one they can see. What they do not know, the cause of the argument, is crucial to the story of me. This is friendship, and it is love, but I already know what they have not learned yet; how dangerous friendship is, how damaging love can be."

Regarding the ending, I can say that I had a guess of what was happening- like, the prologue basically tells you what happens, just not explicitly, but I apparently was just really confused and didn't know what it meant, but I just created my own guess for the ending and got it correct (and I may have seen a review that basically confirmed my suspicions-) The two groups co-exist in their school. Aware yet ignorant. The kids grow into teens and so does their relationships and friendships. Jamie talks about getting married to Autumn, promising to never leave, and Autumn soaks up the reassurances, seeing the fragile state her parent’s marriage is in. But then something changed. Or they changed. Now, they do their best to ignore each other.

That still doesn't stop the way Autumn feels every time she and Finn cross paths, and the growing, nagging thought that maybe things could have been different. Maybe they should be together. I would rate the majority of the book as a 4 star read. I loved following Autumn’s teenage life, friends, family and boyfriends. Sadly, I would have to give the ending a 1 star rating. This book was so uncomfortable to read. The metamorphosis of Autumn runs parallel to my own teen years. I can feel the printed words seeping through my skin and into my veins, rushing to my heart and marking it forever."

Finny is wearing his seat belt. He is blameless. It is Sylvie who is not. When the impact occurs, she sails through the windshield and out into the night, improbably, miraculously, only suffering minor cuts on her arms and face. Though true, it is hard to imagine, so hard that even I cannot achieve the image. All I can see is the moment afterward, the moment of her weightless suspension in the air, her arms flailing in slow motion, her hair, a bit bloody and now wet with rain, streaming behind her like a mermaid's, her mouth a round O in a scream of panic, the dark wet night surrounding her in perfect silhouette.

But it’s also the kind where it’s not even a complete sob? Like it feels shortened? My tears got blue-balled. That’s how it felt. It was incomplete. Like I didn’t get out all of the emotions and tears I wanted to and that really frustrated me. Autumn and Finn's] romance is Shakespeare-worthy in its tragic dimension. Autumn's reflections on love's possibilities and near-misses will surely resonate with the unsettled teen soul, and readers will get exactly what they came for, and then some." - The Bulletin of the Center for Children's BooksNowlin believes she was the first to notice the book’s rise to #BookTok fame. About a year ago, she began to receive messages from readers who had pointed to TikTok as their source for finding her book, though she wasn’t entirely sure what #BookTok could do for her then nine-year-old novel. “I had heard about #BookTok’s influence, but I figured it was too late for it to affect me unless I released something new,” Nowlin said.
