Intended as an antidote to what Hewlett calls the “disappointing” female superheroes of the 1980s British comic scene, Tank Girl – who was based partly on skinhead girls he saw in his home town of Horsham – helped propel the artist into the spotlight. “We went in to push the limits a little bit with that character and just be a little outrageous and say stuff that nobody said and nobody talked about and use words that nobody was allowed to use in comic books and try to get over this sort of pathetic censorship,” Hewlett told Dazed Digital. “You can’t show a nipple, but you can show someone being stabbed to death or this other bullshit that we still have.” Atom Tan Chadderton, David (July 2007). "Monkey: Journey to the West". British Theatre Guide . Retrieved 2 June 2014. After the 1995 film, Hewlett went on to create the band Gorillaz with Blur's Damon Albarn. [5] Martin has also played in various bands, and written various screenplays and scripts. Hewlett was still involved with English bands of the mid-1990s, including illustrating a comic strip version of Pulp's song " Common People". [6]

I delivered it literally an hour before it went to print, and I didn’t like it, but I couldn’t change it at that point,” Hewlett says. “And then the book went on sale and it sold out in six days, so I jumped straight in and said, ‘Look, if we’re going to do a second edition I want to – I insist on doing a different cover.’ And I chose the Female Freedom Fighter because it was very strong and I liked that image.”I guess it’s a good book if the main complaint is that it’s too short. But, there’s definitely a feel that the book is just skimming the surface. Each section could have been fleshed out to become its own book. Though, presumably we’re getting the best of what was available. Hewlett mentions in the beginning that a lot of his early comic book art, especially, has been lost over the years (either not returned by the publisher, or given away or sold or just disappeared). In some ways, it’s a scrapbook, as well as a career survey. His Get the Freebies strip was adapted by BBC Three for a pilot entitled Phoo Action, broadcast in February 2008. [5] At this time, he had moved into a flat with Blur's Damon Albarn after Hewlett split with Oliver, and it was while sharing the flat that the pair came up with the idea of Gorillaz, a virtual band. Albarn would work on the music, while Hewlett would come up with character designs, and both came up with ideas for the members of the band. The first Gorillaz EP was released in 2000 followed by the first album, Gorillaz in 2001. In 2005, their second full studio album, Demon Days was released. [8] His art in Gorillaz and its sound and style would have incredible cross medium influence and this is a pretty important art book because Hewlett's work is scattered around, from Deadline to many other random magazines and zines that nobody would probably have all of.

Under the banner of Gorillaz Hewlett and Albarn won a Grammy in 2006, although it hasn’t all been smooth sailing – there was a three year period when the duo didn’t speak to each other. They have since overcome this and last year Gorillaz released their fourth album Humanz.

Titan Books released The Hole of Tank Girl on 28 September 2012, which encompasses the original Hewlett and Martin material, as well as additional content. [6] The Gorillaz material dominates the book, as it has dominated his career to date. But, it’s the other projects that the book brings to light that I find fascinating. I came for Tank Girl and the Gorillaz, but I stayed for the lesser-known works, like his Bangladesh plein air watercolors or his intricate nature drawings. Lately, the Gorillaz resurgence has been his primary focus. The band embarked on a sprawling tour following their first album in seven years and still have upcoming dates in Europe and Latin America. He describes the Gorillaz process as a bit of a “conveyor treadmill,” and it doesn’t seem likely that will change anytime soon with plenty on the horizon. Hewlett and Albarn are at work on new Gorillaz material, with plans to release a follow-up album to Humanz in 2018. An omnibus edition compiling the two graphic novels Tank Girl: Skidmarks, and Tank Girl: Carioca. Published by Titan Comics. As the line between our digital and physical worlds continues to blur, the conceit of a virtual band may still continue to carry relevance. Gorillaz has always been an opportunity for Hewlett and Albarn to experiment and, more often than not, their ideas hit the target. At the point of writing this in 2016, there is currently the promise of a new album scheduled for next year. I’m intrigued and excited to see what the future might hold for the world's most successful illustrated band. Chances are that it should be something special.

In a conversation with Mark Kermode, Hewlett said that the 1973 French animated film Fantastic Planet was the very first animated film that showed him animation is also a medium for adults. [28] Works [ edit ] Comics [ edit ] Another Albarn collaboration saw Hewlett create artwork for the Chinese contemporary opera Monkey: Journey to the West. His characters were then featured in the BBC’s 2008 Olympic Games animation.

With all that said, in the four years between albums, changing trends in culture began to affect the band. While their postmodernist posturing had felt novel – even inventive – at the start of the millennium, by 2005 things were beginning to change. The taste for irony and pastiche had changed and it all felt a little old-hat. Thankfully Gorillaz had more longevity than many people had assumed. Their real strength lay in their malleability. While musicians tend to have an implicit duty to realness, the beauty of an illustrated act comes from their ability to adapt. For their second album, their true strength lay not in their image, but in the facade that they provided for the music. An image from the sleeve of Demon Days (2005) highlighting the collection of faceless musical collaborators involved in the project. Source: Illustration Chronicles During a 2012 Interview with Alfred Dunhill, he also lists the first film of the Star Wars series as another main influence on his artwork. [23] The third and final chapter in new Tank Girl trilogy and anticipated follow-up to Tank Girl: Gold. Published by Titan Comics One thing I was hoping to see that sadly wasn’t included was his bottle designs for Absolut vodka. Those bottle are gorgeous. But, I was pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of a comic I didn’t even know about: a strip called Get the Freebies! for The Face magazine. Again, as viewed from the career retrospective context of the book, the point is more to show examples of his style for artistic appreciation than it is to present a collection of strips for reading enjoyment, but his Get the Freebies! strips were well represented and a joy to discover, as well as his rarely-seen strip The 16s, where Hewlett re-teamed with his Tank Girl co-creator, Alan Martin, for a Calvin & Hobbes-style comic.
