Shadow of the Bird beautifully and powerfully continues Tim Probert's exceptional Lightfall series. After Bea and Cad's dramatic escape from Lealand in the previous volume, they wake up to a surprise message from the pig wizard - go find Irpa's water spirit for help defeating Kest, the scary bird dude who's after all of Irpa's false suns. The story is derivative (Tolkien and others’ epic stories come to mind), though I did like that one of Bea’s attributes is that she suffers from anxiety and has to constantly battle it to keep going on her quest.See, Irpa has its share of less than fairytale delightful inhabitants but they are part and parcel of this escapist tale which comes luminously and colourfully alive thanks to Probert’s artwork which is a marvellous joy in and of itself. The combination of Cad’s resourceful, capable buoyancy (he might be a jaunty extrovert but he’s more than able to take care of himself) and Bea’s intense, likeable earnestness is the perfect combination, especially when the young girl’s rampaging anxiety gets the better of her. Cad is a marvelous hero, mowing down villains with his sword, and devoting himself to saving others. He is part frog, part giant, and full of myth and wonder. Bea is a great contrast with him. She worries a lot, the darkness spreading around her limbs and head, almost carrying her away at times. But she is also a hero, jumping in when she is needed, bravely fighting off foes and having cold feet (literally) along the way. A chance meeting between Bea, a fiercely loyal human girl, and Cadwallader, a lost Galdurian, ignites a friendship that could change them—and their world—forever.

The land of Irpa has some fearsome reality of its own it must be said, with evil creatures known as Tikarri roaming around to kill off the tenuous light that keeps this sprawling kingdom well-lit and buoyantly alive, but it is also home to characters like Beatrice aka Bea and Cadwallader, the Galdurian of the title, a frog-like person of endless enthusiasm and hopefulness who has endured some pretty terrible things but lived to smile about it anyway.
