You need to be pretty close to the Mesa to feel a bit of warmth.It's more for ambience than anything. If you plan on always or usually using pellets instead of traditional ol’ kindling and wood, the Mesa XL probably makes more sense. With the Mesa, you need to add in the included pellet adapter. Portability: Both the Mesa and the Mesa XL are designed with portability in mind. However, due to its larger size, the Mesa XL might be slightly less convenient to transport than the more compact Mesa. If you plan to take your fire pit on camping trips or to different outdoor locations frequently, the Mesa might be a better option in terms of ease of transportation.
To put it another way, you can roast only 2 marshmallows at a time with the Mesa and 4 with the Mesa XL. Solo Stove says that the Mesa XL has a pellet capacity of about 3x more than Mesa, and will subsequently burn for about 15 minutes longer (about an hour). If you have a smallish balcony area like me the Mesa is the better option from a safety point of view. If you often camp in places where it gets quite cold in the evenings and there are usually more than 3 people in your group, I’d go for the Mesa XL because its heat radius is between 2-3 feet compared with the Mesa’s 1-2 feet. The Mesa is a great place to start if you want to experience the Solo Stove without a large investment. It features the same smokeless tech as Solo’s full-size stoves but in a compact body. It’s also a fun piece to have on hand to set up the kids to roast s’mores rather than light a large fire. It’s the perfect size to place on an outdoor tabletop and simple enough for older kids and teens to safely fire up with minimal adult supervision.

I personally recommend the smaller Mesa for balconies, small tabletop fires and small courtyard areas where space is extremely limited and larger fires aren't really practical or allowed.
