About this deal

We asked celebrity hair stylist Katie Allan, founder of MayFive Hair, to trial a range of the latest hair straighteners in her London salon. Katie has styled hair for the BAFTAS and London Fashion Week and regularly appears on ITV’s This Morning. Her client list includes actor Gemma Chan and presenters Mel Giedroyc and Alex Jones, to name a few.

This model is designed to give you smooth results in just one stroke and we were impressed at how well it worked on fine to medium wavy hair. On board there’s a thermal sensor to continuously measure and maintain the heat so the plates stay at the optimum temperature throughout use. There are no added extras in the box such as a protective heat guard or heat mat, which we think could be a good idea considering the premium price. One Pass, Double Straightening Power: 2 passes in 1, for sleeker, straighter hair with less damage. We liked the sleek design of these straighteners that come with a two-in-one protective storage sleeve that doubles as a styling mat. The ample three-metre swivel cord and slim handle meant it was comfortable in hand too, and they were ready to use in an impressively fast 15 seconds. The costs for delivery, installation services and monthly insurance products cannot be placed on BNPL. One excellent feature of the T3 Lucea is Refresh mode, designed for day two when full-on heat isn’t needed, but a little style touch-up might be. The touchscreen did come with a few warnings about not pressing it in the wrong place at the wrong time, which indicates that accidents may be possible. But we didn't have any issues, so perhaps it was just overcautiousness on T3’s part. This, plus Lucea’s beautiful design, convinced us that a woman must have designed it. Or at least someone who understands how we really style our hair day-to-day, who also knows that we’d like our tech to look gorgeous and perform. Oh, and that sometimes we need a bit of saving from ourselves in the heat department.

A lot of hot hair tools, including most on our list, claim to release negative ions to protect your hair. I used to chalk this up to marketing-speak, but hairstylists I spoke with say ions are helpful. Abra McField, founder of Abra Kadabra Hair and Healing, says hair is usually positively charged due to its water content, and the negative ions these flat irons generate can help dissipate that water. “You get controlled application of the heat you are applying, and you are able to use only as much heat as you need to smooth and straighten your hair, which can prevent damage.”Our Copper Ceramic Dual Plate Straightener is finally here. First one of its kind. True innovative design in the straightener category. It feels premium and comfortable to hold and comes with a decent sized 2.7m cord, which meant we could move about (and dance to Friday night tunes in front of the mirror) while using it. At 520g, it’s surprisingly light in hand too considering its wider than normal heat plates. For peace of mind, after 30 minutes of inactivity, the irons will automatically shut off. While there are several great cordless straightener models on the market, with some already included in this guide, the Cloud Nine Cordless Pro is the one we would opt for regular travel—and it's all thanks to its light and agile design. London-based hairstylist Hollie Rose Clarke says ions in hair tools keep the cuticle layer of your hair smooth, so you'll get a shinier, frizz-free result. “Think of a strand of your hair as being the size of my arm, covered in fish scales (the cuticles)," she says. "When the hair is damaged, they open slightly, resulting in dry, frizzy, and weak hair. When the hair is healthy they are closed, resulting in your hair feeling smoother and stronger.”

Personal recommendations are always the best, and we first discovered the Cloud Nine Wide Iron Hair Straightener not through a flashy marketing campaign, but via a rave review from our Beauty Editor’s local hairdresser. Cloud Nine might not be such an instantly recognizable name compared to Dyson and GHD, but trust us when we say they more than compete when it comes to performance. Major indications of heat damage include hair dryness, dullness, and split and snapped-off ends. You might not notice these overnight, but within a couple of weeks, you’ll start to see a change in your hair. An immediate consequence you’ll notice is limpness, which will affect your hair’s ability to hold your desired style throughout the day. As a good rule of thumb, reserve your flat iron for special and specific events rather than for everyday use (if you can help it). Turning down the temperature on days when your hair is playing ball and doesn’t need too much taming will make a difference too. Or, consider investing in one of the best hair straightener brushes instead, which are designed to minimize heat damage. Which hair straightener plates are best? If you have a non-Buy Now Pay Later balance on your Littlewoods account, you will still need to make at least T3 is the master of bespoke hair-styling experiences. But how do you get personal with straightening? You create a customized Heat ID profile that the T3 Lucea ID Smart Straightening & Styling Iron remembers, then styles your hair at its temperature sweet spot afterwards. That’s how. Keen to upgrade your hair routine with the best new tools? Our selection of the best hair straighteners for 2023 will see you in good stead, come humidity or shine. With luxurious finishes and easy to navigate controls, the best straighteners are perfect for freshening up your style as we approach party season.I was afraid the new batch of wet-to-dry stylers would sizzle hair off like the ones in the early 2000s. But now there are a few that actually work. Dyson's Airstrait ( 9/10, WIRED Recommends) has the same form factor as a standard flat iron, but instead of hot plates, it uses airflow to dry and straighten your hair simultaneously. Using one focused jet of air that moves downward, it dries your hair with a natural, smooth finish. You'll also have the option between two main styling modes (wet and dry) and three temperature settings for each. WIRED product reviewer Brenda Stolyar typically uses it on wet mode to fully dry her hair and switches to dry mode to flatten any puffiness. The entire process, which normally takes her about 45 minutes, now only takes 12 to 15 minutes. Our Copper Ceramic Double Straightener is finally here. The first one of its kind with true innovative design in the straightener category. Floating Ceramic Plates: Advanced Copper Ceramic Technology for a superior and even heat transfer, resulting in faster styling and an ultra-smooth glide all in one pass. Aside from the clever app-controlled settings, which will appeal to some as much as it'll put other technically challenged types off (you can use it without the app if that's the case) This also boasts a digital display so you can keep an eye on heat, which comes in an unusually large range from 175-455°F/80-200°C. The ionic plates help combat frizz and universal voltage means they'll work wherever you take them. Yes, the app might be a little more complicated than simply plugging the flat irons in and pressing the on button, but the nifty tech will reward you for the extra effort.
