All Just a Dream: The ending of the film implies that everything that occurred in the opening sequence (including Sean sleeping with Kelly in anger over Lauren's actions) was part of Sean's fantasies. This is further justified by Lauren and Paul walking out of the party and talking nonchalantly, despite the former having just been raped and vomited on, and the latter having been beat up during a failed hookup.

Sean's admirer – An unnamed student (although her name is probably Mary) who sends Sean anonymous love letters. Her entries in the book are all italicized letters to Sean. She hopes to reveal herself to Sean at the Dressed To Get Screwed Party midway through the book, but when she sees him leave with Lauren, she is heartbroken and commits suicide in a bathtub by slashing her wrists. Corliss, Richard (October 14, 2002). "The Rules of Attraction". Time. Archived from the original on December 20, 2008 . Retrieved July 24, 2022. The Shards by Bret Easton ElThe characters were all unique from one another. While a lot of their drug and relationship habits were similar, each character had their own individual voice. I can’t say that I particularly enjoyed Lauren’s moments. I found her a little annoying and not that interesting. There was just something about her that I wasn’t very fond of. I felt a little indifferent when it came to Sean. He started out interesting, but as the story went on he started to feel a little redundant. Paul however, was my absolute favourite. He felt real and relatable. While he seemed the most sane out of the three main characters, I think it may be possible that he was the most insane. Like I mentioned earlier, I still can’t tell if his relationship with Sean ever even really happened. Roger Ebert described the film as a "skillfully made movie about reprehensible people", giving it two out of four stars. Regarding the main characters, he stated "...by the end, I felt a sad indifference. These characters are not from life and do not form into a useful fiction. Their excesses of sex and substance abuse are physically unwise, financially unlikely and emotionally impossible. I do not censor their behavior but lament the movie's fascination with it." Ebert concluding his review by saying "The inhabitants of "The Rules of Attraction" are superficial and transparent. We know people like that, and hope they will get better." [15] Author's reception [ edit ] In a 2013 interview with Film School Rejects, Ellis stated that he doesn't think the original American Psycho "really works as a film":

American Psycho is the type of film you remember. It’s witty and unique and more or less introduced Christian Bale. The film also features ungodly displays of violence against women that are properly contextualized as undesirable behaviour even if they are perpetrated by the protagonist. But for every American Psycho, there are hundreds of films coming out that are forgotten within six to twelve months. Peitzman, Louis. "This Is How All The Bret Easton Ellis Novels Fit Together". BuzzFeed . Retrieved August 29, 2019. Avary stated that his goal was to create "an arthouse film for teenagers". [9] Budget constraints meant Avary had to finance the filming of Victor's European trip himself. He followed actor Kip Pardue around various countries with a handheld camera, filming him 24/7 with the actor remaining in character from the moment he stepped on the plane departing the US. [10] Music [ edit ] The book was adapted into a film of the same name in 2002. Ellis has remarked that among film adaptations of his books, The Rules of Attraction came closest to capturing his sensibility and recreating the world of his novels. [1] Plot summary [ edit ]Salfield, Alice; Gallagher, Andy; MacInnes, Paul (July 19, 2010). "Video: 'I really wasn't that concerned about morality in my fiction' ". The Guardian . Retrieved July 28, 2010. Popular Is Dumb: Sean is highly sought after as a sexual and romantic prospect by other characters. He's also both Book Dumb and almost fatally Street Dumb, and in general just not a very bright guy. Four of Ellis's works have been made into films. Less than Zero was adapted in 1987 as a film of the same name, but the film bore little resemblance to the novel. Mary Harron's adaptation of American Psycho was released in 2000. Roger Avary's adaptation of The Rules of Attraction was released in 2002. The Informers, co-written by Ellis and based on his collection of short stories, was released in 2008. Ellis also wrote the screenplay for the 2013 film The Canyons. There was also a movie adaptation of the book in 2002, from Roger Avary, which Ellis names as his favorite of the adaptations of his work. P.O.V. Cam: In the film, when Sean is bedding Kelly in the opening sequence, we see his perspective as he stares at her moaning in bed.

Ellis, Bret Easton (November 16, 1990). "Simon & Schuster Pulls the Plug on Novel: Books: Publisher says it will not market 'American Psycho.' Author Bret Ellis calls the novel's gore gruesome, but necessary". Los Angeles Times. It’s very unfortunate that no one remembers that Bret Easton Ellis wrote The Rules of Attraction. It’s a solid (albeit dark) novel and the Roger Avary 2002 adaptation is one of the most fun and daring pieces of indie cinema no one actually remembers. Shout-Out: The sleazy film student in the beginning of the film is talking about a certain movie that everyone says is "just a Tarantino film."

He's not wrong, credit to him. Though maybe 'freaked out' is a little generous of Samsa's reaction.) This is probably the worst time to read Ellis, as he's so damn depressing. Disaffection is the perfect word for his books, the way you feel when you're reading them. (I must say, also, how great is this cover? Not sure why it is, but I think it's great.)

Solym, Clément (May 25, 2022). "Bret Easton Ellis de retour au printemps 2023". ActuaLitté (in French). Ellis's first novel, Less than Zero, is a tale of disaffected, rich teenagers of Los Angeles written and rewritten over a five-year period from Ellis's second year in high school, earlier drafts being "...more autobiographical and read like teen diaries or journal entries—lots of stuff about the bands I liked, the beach, the Galleria, clubs, driving around, doing drugs, partying", according to Ellis. [37] Camden. Hampden. I do believe there is literary collusion going on. No Russians as far as I can tell were involved. The Loins Sleep Tonight: When Sean attempts to bed Kelly in the film, he discovers that he's not as interested as he usually is because he's not drunk.
