About this deal

The police investigation reveals an underbelly of lies and scandals in their neighborhood. Oh what a web we weave…. Audrey is similarly terrified-how is she to safeguard her secret now? If she can’t control this world, how is she to control the next one? And how will she protect her good china? Released on the 15th of August in 2017, this title was published through the ‘Doubleday Canada’ publishing label. Setting up her fourth title it works as a suspense filled thriller that aims to keep the readers on the edges of their seats. Much like her previous title, ‘The Couple Next Door’, which was also a thriller, this seeks to create a compelling narrative that engages and hooks its audience. The police have plenty of suspects, but few clues. This isn’t a new premise, but I loved how this story unraveled, including a few surprising twists and a surprise ending. I think this would make a terrific movie! From the very first chapter I was hooked into this story. Lapena wastes no time jumping into the nitty-gritty and it kept me guessing until the very end.

A]fast-paced whodunit. . . Not a Happy Family works well as a crime novel, and there are some fun surprises. Overall, Lapena has produced another engaging and entertaining read.” Everyone Here Is Lying starts strong and never lets up. William would seem to be the perfect father and husband. But he’s been having an affair. And when his paramour breaks it off, he heads home for a little quiet time. But his nine year old daughter, who has behavioral issues, is there, acts up and he hits her. He leaves, but later in the day his wife calls to say the daughter is missing. THE mistress of dysfunctional family stories, Lapena’s seventh stand-alone thriller is magnificent, a perfect demonstration of her exceptional skill as a storyteller… Utterly compelling, this is as good as it gets when it comes to suburban noir. ” The best part of the book is its impeccable pacing. The mystery entices you, urging you to make guesses about who committed the crime, who took Avery, the 9-year-old little girl. The story weaves a plotline that combines the intrigue of "We Need to Talk About Kevin" and the tension of "Prisoners." As the title suggests, there are multiple suspects, and everyone seems to be hiding something, making it hard to pinpoint the perpetrator and their motive. Everyone Here Is Lying is a Shari Lapena signature read: a taut, clever, chilling ride of manipulation and family secrets, with a terrifying question at its core—what if you can’t believe the very people you love the most? Lapena masterfully builds a chain of suspense through the unsuspecting neighbors of Connaught Street, and no family is spared.Prepare to be consumed!”Shari Lapena is the queen of the "just one more chapter" read. A chilling exploration of the worst-case repercussions and extensive fallout of a brief affair.' Sarah Vaughan Toronto author Shari Lapena is rapidly becoming an international phenomenon with her gripping stories of nice people in pretty neighbourhoods all gone bad. Everyone Here is Lying is the best of her seven works. It begins with a bang and ends with a twist no one will guess. In between, there are clues, lies, intrigue and a lot of well-drawn characters doing nasty things…Lapena doesn’t get a paragraph wrong here and she’s unrelenting in her conflicted characters.” This book starts off with William Wooler getting dumped by the woman he is having an affair with. All he wants is some peace and quiet to blow off some steam, but when he arrives home his daughter Avery is there unexpectedly. Avery is mouthy and uncontrollable, so William immediately loses his temper with her (after all, he has had a bad day). After William and Avery’s confrontation, Avery leaves the house and does not return.

A safe neighborhood, a missing child, and a whole host of parents protecting children, wives protecting husbands, and nefarious and shady characters hiding in plain sight. I loved it!” Yes, this is another book about a missing child, but what makes this one different from the others is that this time, the child is devious and manipulative-or in other words, she was UNLIKABLE! I've read quite a few Shari Lapena books now, and I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with them. I think I've finally figured out that I adore her mysteries (someone is killed and there are multiple suspects), while I don't like her domestic thrillers (husband or wife could be lying, so are they or aren't they). This mystery definitely goes onto my list of favorites from her.

The suspense here is real; Lapena does a great job of exposing layers of domestic dishonesty and betrayal one conversation at a time.” That is actually the case with the whole book. It seems like it was brought to us in such... passive way that the it was hard to be emotionally invested. A taut, clever, chilling ride of manipulation and family secrets . . . Prepare to be consumed!' Ashley Audrain Somewhere around 50% mark we all thought we figured out who the killer was, but I am glad to say we were wrong.

It affected me personally as my son developed behavioural problems at nine and was diagnosed with ADHD. I could sympathize with William and Erin Wooler with their struggles in trying to handle a child who is neurodiverse. It isn’t easy and puts a strain on marriage(s).Michael, who is Avery’s older brother, expects to meet her after his football practice to walk home from school together. She is not at the school nor at home. He phones Erin, their mother, to say that Avery is missing. Erin rushes home while Michael searches places in the neighbourhood where Avery could be playing. No-one does suburban paranoia like Shari Lapena—this slowly unfurling nightmare will have you biting your nails until the end.” From the very start, I was hooked by this idyllic yet secretive neighborhood. With each of them hiding plenty from both one another as well as themselves, it was fun to watch the police unravel it all. The downside to this, however, was twofold. First off, the police themselves were irritatingly inept. Not in the way, however, that sells a thriller as there wasn’t a secondary character there to put the pieces together themselves. But to make matters worse, the multiple POVs left literally nothing to the imagination. This meant that with each reveal, attention merely moved on to someone else, letting all the delicious secrets simply drop right then and there. Each family member(including the deceased couple) was repugnant, loathsome, and distasteful in different ways. One or more members of the Merton family is possibly a psychopath. Releasing her first book in 2007 Shari Lapena made her début onto the literary scene with her novel ‘Things Go Flying’. It was a stand-alone title with shades of David Sedaris and Douglas Copeland in it, as it brought their wit and warmth to the forefront of the narrative. With a creative approach to the genre, it manages to take a flight of fantasy that was equally grounded in its sense of character and personality.

Shari Lapena consistently delivers entertaining SUSPENSE, and this one is no exception! I enjoyed my time in Stanhope, and look forward to her next! This was an extremely unique narrative tone for me. The story is told from a distant third person perspective, yet I felt fully connected and engrossed within this twisty and suspenseful tale. I loved the short chapters of this family drama that always left me on edge wanting to read “just one more”. My suspicions flew all over the place, suspecting every single character at one point or another. You wake up in hospital, with no idea how you got there. They tell you that you were in an accident; you lost control of your car whilst driving in a dangerous part of town. As the story progressed, I found myself immersed in the twists and turns, unable to tear myself away from the gripping narrative. The author skillfully wove a web of suspicion and intrigue, keeping me on the edge of my seat with each revelation. The relentless pace and the constant sense of unease made it a rollercoaster of emotions, which I couldn't get enough of. What happened to Avery? Detectives Gully and Bledsoe are on the case and determined to find her. In a neighborhood where everyone is keeping secrets, who may have witnessed her disappearance? Good thing about this book is that it is easy to read, so we all finished the book faster then we planned, excluding one girl who DNFed it. Someone We Know is a tour de force of thriller writing. Shari Lapena proves yet again that she is the mistress of the pacy plot, cliff edge tension and menacing suburban claustrophobia. Fans will be delighted and if you haven’t read her books yet, then why on earth not?”
