About this deal

I read this with the Pigeonhole book club, where a section of the story is released every day over ten days. I know Susan Lewis is a popular author and the bright cover drew me to the book, so I thought I would give it a go.

I really didn't get involved in the storyline until the second half, and then I really did become involved. It took me three days to read the first half, but I read the second half in one sitting. At times there were parts which felt overly dramatised but I’m not sure if that’s the writing or the narrators interpretation. The characters were unlikeable, over privileged and cold. I couldn't relate to any of them and that's a massive negative for me. What a complex family dynamic and so much going on with the plot. It made for a full on pacy read. There are a lot of characters, flaws, secrets, twists and a lot thrown into the mix ( almost kitchen sink level) Firstly the biggest CONGRATULATIONS to Susan Lewis on her '50th' novel, what an amazing achievement, I cant believe that I have read the majority of them! It was happiness in totality for the first season of summer that she was there. Then quite a lot went on, including a love affair with an individual that ended up being one of the most wanted by the FBI. The pound also decided to lose value and the author realized that full time living in France did have its differences to a vacation for two weeks on holiday on a yacht on the Riviera.

This novel marks Susan Lewis’ 50th novel, which is quite an achievement. As this was my first experience of her writing, I am unable to judge whether it is typical of her style. It’s an unusual request but she finally agrees. As Marina reads the first chapter of ‘That Girl’ by E.L. Stalwood, she realises that the manuscript is a thinly veiled account of traumatic events in her past that involves both her current and ex-husbands along with various others. The plot focuses on family relationships, which we know Susan Lewis is a master of. It also includes the issues of infidelity, teenage pregnancy, mental health, assault and murder. The family is wealthy, but philanthropic. They are also complicated. A few of the complications I could have done without.

Publication Order of Anthologies

The one thing I would say about this is I found it very predictable and it wasn’t that different to other thrillers I’ve read in the past. Because of the similarities, I don’t think it’s 100% memorable, but I definitely did enjoy it!

Susan Lewis has a gift for telling warm family stories that also take you by surprise’ Jane Corry‘A gripping read’ Bella - My Lies, Your Lies has gone straight to the top of my favourite Susan reads. Full of drama, intrigue with so many twists and turns, I promise you'll be surprised and captivated right to the end” - Carmel Harrington Marina Forster is currently the Head of Fiction at a London publishing house which is now under the management of her wealthy American husband, Maxim Forster. She’s the mother of twin teenage girls, and as well as a house in Holland Park, they own a beautiful estate in the Cotswolds.

Susan Lewis Book Releases 2023/2024

Now I am a HUGE Susan Lewis fan and have been for a long long time.... so I absolutely hate to admit that I just didn't particularly like this one 😥 it didn't feel like the usual style of this author which I've grown sonused to. My first book by this author. I had the audiobook read by Helen Stern, a great range of distinct voices for the array of characters. Normally you get an answer to the mystery by the end or a blatant clue. Which doesn't happen here. Which was also a dissapointment.

There is a good representation and discussion surrounding a mental health diagnosis within this book which I found to be written about in a very informative way. Thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was such an original concept and I was well and truly hooked. It was one of those books that was always at the forefront of my mind when I wasn’t reading it, I even dreamt about it! Rich, seamless and masterful storytelling with so many ‘oh my god’ twisty moments… Absolute genius. I was totally gripped’ Rebecca Thornton - Hanna is a mother of two with a supportive husband and loving friends. However, the family dynamic isn’t the most straightforward and there are lots of secrets being withheld. When a life changing murder occurs, Hannah must work out who is causing her and her family so much hurt and threatening her family, before more damage is done. Also the ending just felt anticlimactic... nothing was really solved and there are too many unanswered questions for my liking.straight. In addition, I frequently found myself confused about what was going on. I also didn’t find any of the characters likeable with Marina particularly unsympathetic. As a result, it was hard to feel particularly engaged though I did read to the end. The glamorous life of the yachts and French living was wonderful, and there were plenty of interesting people to speak with. It all returned once summer arrived, but there were many months that stretched in between them. It was all too much to bear and the artist decided to return to the sunny state of California. Overall, this was fine, but it took me over a month to read it. I'd give this author a whirl again though.
