About this deal

For a combination of blue, bone, and red Citadel Colour paints that can be used with Terradon Turquoise, we suggest the following: Marble is always something that has eluded me. I've tried doing it before with traditional brushwork and I never liked the results. I've seen folks doing marble with airbrushes, but until recently I didn't have access to one. Several types of goods are exempt from being returned. Perishable goods such as newspapers or magazines cannot be returned. We also do not accept products that are intimate or sanitary goods, hazardous materials, or flammable liquids or gases. Ushabti Bone– A light, sandy bone color that provides a warm contrast to the bright cool hue of Terradon Turquoise. It can be used for highlighting or as a base color. I have had a great deal of fun experimenting with using various real-world colour schemes that can be found in nature for my Tyranids. I’ve so far attempted schemes based on the following:

Pallid Wych Flesh: Apply a spot highlight to the shirt, ropes, net and belt, as well as a line highlight to the skin. The Contrast spray primers also come with matching base paint versions. I tested Wraithbone and as you can see, the result is pretty close. However, even though Wraithbone is a base paint, the coverage is as you would expect from a light, almost white bone colour – not that great. It took me about 6 or 7 thin layers for perfect coverage over a medium grey primer. Because of the number of layers, I had to apply the result wasn’t perfectly smooth and I noticed the Contrast paint dried noticeably more uneven. Contrast paints really benefit from a perfectly smooth base coat. Experimenting with Contrast paints & Contrast MediumYou can easily paint over Contrast paints to tidy up pooled areas, deepen the shading, or add highlights by layering or drybrushing. Contrast paints are transparent by nature, even when applying several layers, though the colour will build up with multiple layers. The base colour will always shine through, so you’ll ideally want to apply them over a light basecoat. Don’t apply them too thinly, as the medium won’t be able to do its magic. It’s better to apply more and soak up any excess with a clean brush. Because of the transparent nature, the colour of the basecoat will affect the outcome of the paint – see the guides by Warhammer Chelmsford above.

Wraithbone or Grey Seer primer helps but isn’t necessary, so feel free to experiment with other base colours and light primers. Blue Horror: Apply a line highlight to the skirt and cape, and a spot highlight to the weapons and tentacles. Contrast paints have very vibrant pigments and create a lot of “tonal variety”: recesses are suitable dark, pronounced areas lighter. Therefore, with a single layer of Contrast, you can combine basecoating and shading in a single step and will often end up with some basic highlights as well.Kantor Blue– A dark blue color that complements the bright green hue of Terradon Turquoise. It can be used for shadows or as a base color. I painted the off-yellow skin in slightly different ways on my Barbgaunts, Psychophage, and Von Ryan’s Leapers – employing various combos of Plaguebearer Flesh and thinned-down Nazdreg Yellow over a Wraithbone base, with highlights ranging from Dorn Yellow to Flayed One Flesh – but they all still look like closely-related beasties. I’ve got yet another approach in mind for my Termagants…

You could even experiment with painting the darker Contrast over “medium” base colours, for example, Wyldwood (dark brown) over Baneblade Brown (medium khaki/light brown) for a really deep dark brown. Or mix your Contrast paints with a lot of Contrast Medium or Lahmian Medium to use them as a wash or glaze.Stage 2 is layering. This stage involves applying a layer of a lighter colour, generally focussed towards the top of the model. Layers, as the name would suggest, are applied with several light coats. Because of their transparency, you can’t just apply another layer to cover any mistakes. You need to paint on the base colour first, then apply another layer of Contrast, but even then, the result often will be patchy. I recommend painting over with a matching regular acrylic paint to hide any imperfections. The great thing about this scheme is that if I need to paint a lot of models fast, as you often do with Tyranids, then they look great and ‘Battle Ready’ at just the Contrast paint stage and I can add the highlights later. The idea of painting over white primer or a white zenithal highlight with glazes and washes isn’t new but an approach often used by competition level painters. But the real “genius” of Games Workshop was to turn this technique into an easy and satisfying product for the masses. Contrast paints mixed 1:1 with Contrast or Lahmian Medium will turn your paint into a wash or glaze – great for creating unique washes that you can’t find anywhere else.

Don’t apply Contrast paints too thinly or else the medium can’t do its magic. Apply them generously and soak up excess paint instead. Pallid Wych Flesh: Add some spot highlight to the shell, focussing on the tips of ridges and edges. For the actual marbling, I use the new Wraithbone base paint. This is where the Saran Wrap and sponging comes into play. Any item not in its original condition, is damaged or missing parts for reasons not due to our errorThen, along comes Contrast and it hits me, we can use the transparency of this new paint system to make marble in a stupid easy way. Marble wiithout needing to airbrush or hand paint the veins is possible and easier than ever. T’au Empire: The T’au Empire is a faction of technologically advanced soldiers and machinery in the Warhammer 40K universe. Their army includes a range of infantry, guns, and tanks, all featuring a sleek, futuristic design. Terradon Turquoise can be used to paint the armour and weaponry of T’au soldiers, adding a pop of color to their predominantly white and blue color scheme.
