So I requested this in NetGalley to listen as I thought it was a thriller reading the synopsis and knowing the authors writing style. I can’t say this was the case sadly. One of the strengths in this novel, as in all of her books, are the incredible characters that she introduces us to. There is a fairly good sized cast of characters here, some old, some young, good guys and bad guys, and some people who are just trying to get along in life. Felix is one character who fits into this last category. He’s a widower and misses his wife and son dearly. In this effort to still be of service to his community, he has a secret job, he is an “Exiteer”. The Exiteer’s job is to sit with a person who is choosing to end his or her own life, most often due to terminal illness, incredible debilitating pain, etc. They are not allowed to assist in any way, they are just there so that their families know that they didn’t die alone.Pensioner Felix Pink is a member of the Exiteers, a group of discreet volunteers who serve as witnesses for terminally ill people that have chosen to end their lives. They also tidy up, ensuring that the deaths appear to have been by natural causes. The song has been covered many times, notably by DJ Ötzi whose version titled "Do Wah Diddy" peaked at No.9 on the Ö3 Austria Top 40, as well as charting in Germany, Switzerland, the UK and Ireland. I actually enjoyed this book which has fatal and dark concept but with the talents of the author, your reading experience goes smooth. She handled those sensitive matters adroitly with smartness and creative sense of humor.

This was my first experience of Belinda Bauer’s work and it proved quite a surprise. I came to it with little prior knowledge of the plot, as I prefer to read mysteries and thrillers ‘cold’. I hadn’t realised that despite it being crime fiction, dealing with a sensitive subject, that there would be a strong comedic element running throughout. Still, the choice of Tim McInnerny, well known for his work in comedy, as the narrator for the audiobook should have been a clue. Walker-Moss, Lillian (2020-10-30). "Sophisticated Boom Boom". WFMU (Radio). Interviewed by Sheila Burgel. DC Calvin Bridge is a character not as heart-warming as Felix, but he has his charm. He is temporarily in charge of running the investigation (albeit reluctantly) he has his problems, a troubling history but a keen and caring attitude to policing.
