It contains an overview of important soil factors with regards to weed control, including pH, texture and depth of the soil, organic matter content, compaction and moisture levels. Marijuana Horticulture, by Jorge Cervantes, is a classic in the field. The book was first published in 1983 and has been updated several times since then. The latest edition contains an expanded section on hydroponics and covers all aspects of growing marijuana indoors under artificial light or outdoors with natural sunlight.

As the technique started to become established, it enabled growers to reduce the size of their plots while increasing the quantity and potency of the cannabis they produced.
