About this deal

From war criminals, murderers, the wrongly accused, and fraud cases, this is a book that covers a wide range of dealings inside the world of law and the grim reality of brutal cases which show it isn't like it is on TV.

There are moments of real honesty, when he discusses the changes to the legal aid process in recent years, and why he is no longer able to take new legal aid cases “One reason I won’t take on any new public-funded cases is that the service I could offer would be substandard. I would not be able to instruct the experts I have been instructing for years ... and I would be faced with going to cheaper counterparts who I had less confidence in” He makes a justified argument that a serious and complex case such as murder requires a completely different set of skills and amount of work to a less serious crime such as theft & the remuneration that barristers get for each case should be appropriate. If you are an American you won't know what a barrister is, nor what 'taking silk' means, so some definitions first., in spoilers so you can skip them if you are from the UK. Under the Wig is the memoir of William Clegg QC and makes for a fascinating read. The book is told in alternating chapters where one chapter is about a famous case he has worked on and the other gradually tells his story of how he came to be a barrister.

It was also really interesting to read a book from ‘the other side’, from a defence perspective rather than prosecution. This was particularly true in the Miss Yeates murder trial, where he was on the defence team. I found myself on a couple of occasions comparing it to a number of FBI heavy novels I’ve read (Mindhunter springs to mind), and seeing the various methods employed by both, and the differences they have. It was fascinating. William Clegg QC is very much anti capital punishment because of possible miscarriages of justice, and I thought he did a good job of putting his reasons for this across. One of England's best barristers provides a fascinating sometimes hilarious combination of a personal odyssey and insider accounts of the most important and famous court cases of recent times.' You have no idea how long it’s going to last when you’re starting out,” says Laura Lee. “The whole of last year was a real ‘Holy shit!’ moment. We set out to be a worldwide band – and we got it.”

Even once I got over wanting to be a lawyer, I still have an interest in the subject and I love a good legal drama, so a real life account of life as a QC appealed to me straight away. Below is my review of Under the Wig by William Clegg QC.The book, as a whole, is gripping and informative. Even though I'm familiar with many of the things mentioned since I work in the same profession, I find chapters about legal practise in the UK fascinating since no one in Malaysia take silk, jury trials was abolished in 1993, no such thing as part time judge and lawyers aren't divided into many different categories such as barrister, solicitor or solicitor advocate (with solicitor can only appear in lower courts). Here in Malaysia, all lawyers registered with Bar Council are known as advocate & solicitor. Twists are easy to do and not as time-consuming as some other styles. However, it will frizz and tangle your natural hair faster. Keep the twist as small as possible so you're less likely to have a protruding bulge under your wig. The great virtue of this utterly compelling book is that Bill Clegg QC tells it as it is. Now, in the terrible chaos engulfing a great profession and on his way to the top. A life of a top criminal advocate within a profession he loves and adorns, with many high profile cases well summarised. Written for the interested non-lawyer, it has an excellent structure of career progression and specific cases combined together, chapter by chapter. It reads like the man: direct, clear, properly combative, reasonable and devoid of artificial rhetorical. This is a gripping book – one that once you start reading you just don’t want to put down. The writing flows and it reads like a fiction book in the sense that it’s very accessible and holds your interest from start to finish. I really enjoyed Under the Wig and definitely recommend it! Bill' Clegg is head of chambers at 2 Bedford Row, one of the top four criminal sets in London. His aim in writing this book was to demystify the work of a defence lawyer, as well as drawing attention to the Government's cuts in Legal Aid.
