About this deal

I hope that the publication will pay tribute to an accomplished footballer and an accomplished man.” Mrs Callender started working in an architect’s office during her studies to gain some experience in the industry, which helped her put all the theory she was learning into practice. Life-long Eagles fan James Wright, a former teacher at Cumnor House School, on Pampisford Road, South Croydon, has heavily researched Callender’s life and published ‘The Sad Story of Billy Callender’ in November 2011.

He said: "It was the biggest funeral Prudhoe has ever seen. Thousands of people turned out to pay their respects." Sustainability is of particular interest to Mrs Callender, who believes we should all be doing so much more towards living greener and working towards a more sustainable future. “I believe designing energy efficient homes using sustainable building products should be the norm, not an alternative,” she said. “Great design shouldn’t only be about the way a building looks, it should also be about how the building functions, responds to the surrounding environment and provides comfort and ‘liveability’ to present and future occupants.” It was originally planned for supporters to visit next month before their side face Newcastle United in the Premier League, but the plans have been changed to allow more people to attend. Callender was originally from Prudhoe in Northumberland and worked as a miner in his teenage years. He first played football for Wylam Primitive Methodist Church Club, before progressing to Prudhoe Castle FC in his teens. The supporters have generously agreed to meet the cost of cleaning the grave to make sure it will be in tip-top condition for their visit to Prudhoe. Now, 90 years on from his death, a group of Crystal Palace supporters will be visiting Prudhoe in the summer to pay tribute to the club legend Billy Callender made 225 appearances for the Crystal Palace between 1923 and 1932 and was a crowd favourite. My response was “Yes – why wouldn’t you?” To which he replied that he doesn’t work on his own. Despite his initial hesitation, he accepted the award. On the day of the ceremony we travelled to the base – my two daughters and their partners, and my mother as well. Two commandos were awarded that day. The other medal recipient had the first seat, then Brett, Elvi, myself and the rest of my family, and Iain. Billy's tragic story was immoratlised b lifelong Palace fan James Wright ten years ago in a mini-book titled The Sad Story of Billy Callender, where Wright pays tribute to his kindness and devotion, especially in Ella’s last days when she was bed-ridden.

A great part of my career and loving great design means that buying architectural magazines and watching shows like Grand Designs can be counted as ‘working’!” she enthused.Edgewell Road Cemetery in Prudhoe, Northumberland, where Billy Callender was laid to rest (Image: Google Streetview) Mr Wright told the Chronicle Echo: “Callender was totally loyal and devoted. He stayed with her right to the very end. It is impossible not to be moved by what happened.” Read More Related Articles Callender’s signing was one of the last made by Edmund Goodman, who still holds the record as Palace’s longest-serving manager.

Once a humble pit lad in a Northumbrian mine, Billy Callendar is something of a legendary figure in the history of Crystal Palace FC. Selhurst Park has seen its fair share of highs and lows, but there have been few tragedies as striking as sad tale of one former goalkeeper, who is said to haunt the famous ground. Cllr Angie Scott, who represents Prudhoe North on Northumberland County Council, has worked alongside the history project in making sure the visit happens, and was full of praise for the team of volunteers. Following the death, Callender travelled up to Northumberland to visit family in his time of need before he returned to London in July for the start of pre-season. She said: "Eddie and his team are so passionate about the history of Prudhoe and really want to pass the history to younger generations in our town. However, when fiancé Ella Leslie died from crippling disease polio in May 1932, the Palace number one was overcome with grief and took his own life at Selhurst just two months later. Fast forward a few years and Mrs Callender and her family now live in Miami, Gold Coast where she runs a thriving sustainable building design business from home and has won a prestigious industry award to boot. “I’m very proud of the National Student Design Award I won for a sustainable townhouse project in Chermside and am now planning to build sustainable townhouses of my own,” she said. Mrs Callender originally enrolled in a Diploma of Building Design with TAFE Digital when she lived in the small town of Dolphin Point, near Ulladulla in NSW. “I had just had my third child, so thought it would be a good opportunity to study subjects I’d always had a yearning to know more about,” she said. “Little did I know that this would become a new career I’m passionate about and that I would not return to nursing.”
