About this deal

Behind each grille on the top of the soundbar there’s a 66mm full-range driver, carefully angled to give it the best chance of reflecting sound from your ceiling for that overhead Dolby Atmos effect. There’s support for the Dolby Digital Decoding format but the DHT-S216’s biggest selling point is its inclusion of DTS Virtual: X, which can be activated while in Movie or Music mode. What is DTX Virtual:X and how does it work? There are two main issues with the way the Denon DHT-S316 delivers sound. That’s not many, but they’re each, in their own way, significant. Mind you, it’s quite easy to overcome this shortcoming: you simply don’t play the system at levels at which it’s not comfortable. The other issue is rather more difficult to deal with.

As far as the soundbar is concerned, the only realistic criticisms concern its treble reproduction. The top end is a little rolled-off and restricted here – so when the going gets toppy, the Denon can’t give full expression to that shattering glass or those bullet-shells tinkling to the floor during any recent action movie you care to mention. some of these web prices are cheaper than in-store, so please mention that you've seen these offers online) Denon says it’s designed the DHT-S416 to be easy to set-up and use. The soundbar supports wall-mounting and features a HDMI ARC (with CEC support for control with the TV remote) and an optical input. Bluetooth is included for wireless pairing to other sources.

It’s the audio that matters with Denon’s budget soundbar

Helping you to truly feel like you’re at the movies, the Denon DHT-S416 is supplied with a separate subwoofer. Featuring a bass reflex port, this subwoofer is both compact and powerful. For easy positioning, the link between soundbar and sub is wireless. At 900 x 82 x 55mm (WDH) the soundbar is tidy enough to sit comfortably beneath any TV of 43in or more, and unless it’s one of those TVs that sits very low on its stand, it’s not going to obscure the bottom of the screen as it does so. Of course, you may prefer to position your new soundbar on the wall; if so, Denon has included a couple of basic fittings on the rear of the soundbar, and its 1.8kg weight isn’t going to present any danger to your plastering.

On the inside are left and right speakers, composed of bi-amplified mid-woofers and tweeters. The soundbar uses digital amplification and DSP processing, but Denon is fairly tight-lipped on the exact numbers. The same goes for the included wireless subwoofer, which delivers the low-end frequencies and is styled to match the soundbar. The rear-ported sub fires downwards and comes with optional non-skid pads. It measures 17.2 x 31.1 x 17.2cm (WHD) and weighs 6.6kg.Sonically, the DHT-S216 performs well regardless of the input source and you’ve got plenty of options in terms of customising your audio experience.

There’s three EQ presets to choose from – Movie, Music, and Night – and the DHT-S416 has three Denon Dialogue Enhancer modes for improved clarity with speech from TV broadcasts. Denon’s Pure mode also aims to eliminate surround processing by removing any audio characteristics/artifacts for a cleaner sound. As someone who's always thought the Sonos PlayBar was overrated in terms of sound quality, the HEOS Bar proved something of a revelation. DTS Virtual:X is an audio technology that recreates surround sound without the need for multiple speakers. It does so by analysing audio signals and using psychoacoustic algorithms to simulate where they would be placed in a 3D space, which can include areas above and behind the listener. The subwoofer, meanwhile, is an equally neat 170 x 340 x 318mm (WDH) and an unthreatening 5.2kg. Thanks to its wireless configuration, it can be stashed pretty much anywhere you want (as long as it’s in the same room as the soundbar, of course, and as long as it has access to mains power).HDMI with Audio Return Channel:Exceptional sound clarity through one single connection to your TV — plus, control the DHT-S416 with your TV’s remote. Its midrange reproduction is nicely detailed, projects well and keeps dialogue distinct even if all is mayhem on either side. The dynamic variations it’s asked to deal with during Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri are handled without alarms, and it retains its composure even when asked to perform at significant volume. High-quality 2.1 channel soundbar with wireless subwoofer: Powerful, dynamic Denon home theatre sound All of this comes with caveats that you have to accept right off the bat. First, surround sound won’t be an option because there’s no way to make it work. Since this isn’t part of Denon’s HEOS lineup, the DHT-S216 doesn’t support it, wired or wireless. That’s a big reason why the third-party sub openness is all the more important. For its limitations and price, the DHT-S216 was a pleasant surprise. We were impressed with how full sound came out despite not having a separate subwoofer. While it naturally couldn’t fully emulate a pair of rear surrounds, it held its own quite well in delivering something that felt like more than just a 2.1 “sweet spot” listening and viewing experience.
