Description

Dungeon Of The Mad Mage Board Game is a fantasy adventure board game inspired by the Dungeons & Dragons world of D&D. The game features character classes, custom dice and cards, and cooperative group play where players explore the 27-level “Tower of Zagamar” to recover artifacts and build a powerful party. This new installment also rights one of the slight gripes I had with the previous games by allowing you Hero to progress up to level four, rather than just level two. It makes for extra character development, especially if you’re progressing through the Campaign mode. Heroes continue until they have met the objective of that story. They can then use the treasure they have amassed to buy upgrades, treasure or level up their character ready for the next stage of the campaign. This allows for real character development as you play through the campaign. There are a set of additional cards that are not used during early parts of the campaign. This increases the difficulty as you work towards the end of the story. Final Thoughts on Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage

That's where the rest of the group comes in. While you could get away with playing with fewer than 5 characters in previous titles in the series Dungeon of the Mad Mage really feels tailored to an entire party of 5. The other four characters definitely have roles to play, but next to Marcon's flashy death-explosions they all tend to live in his shadow a bit, especially the rogue Trosper. That's all well and good if you are playing with fewer than 5 players, and having people control more than 1 character, or playing with younger players who get an extra thrill from being the most powerful of the lot, but it's a bit underwhelming to walk around disabling traps or taking a swing at a single monster the turn after Marcon turned an entire room full of the baddies into gibs with the wave of his hand. Notably, compared to the other games in the series, I felt like the cooperative element of the game was more important than ever. Each hero has their own special abilities and it’s vital that you work together to achieve your objective. Winning and Losing Surge - Important because if you lose all your HP, this is the level you will reset to after using a healing surge. Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage can also be combined with the other D&D Adventure System Cooperative Play Board Games, including the terrifying Tomb of Annihilation, Temple of Elemental Evil, The Legend of Drizzt, Castle Ravenloft, and Wrath of Ashardalon, to create an even more exciting experience. The Adventure System games just keep getting better. Dungeon of the Mad Mage introduces some really well-thought-out features but doesn’t over-complicate things, making it a great option for adventure game veterans and newbies alike.

Encounter cards are unforeseen events or situations that you’re going to have to deal with before you can do anything else. Disappointingly, they’re rarely a surprise birthday party for your hero thrown by your fellow adventurers. If I was running the game, I would have just created story based leveling with each floor passed resulting in a level gained. However, as a player I wasn't able to control that mechanic and found our group a couple times struggling heavily in battles. Or suffering badly from traps. Along with the missing read aloud text for this entire campaign setting, it can make describing every single new floor hard. Especially because I have to re learn what a floor is to be looking like 23 separate times! Once this has been dealt with, the Villains and the Monsters take their turns. Each one will list its actions on its card, which often differ depending on where your hero is. Moving Through the Game

The Dungeon of the Mad Mage Board Game follows a dungeon crawl for an entire party of adventurers”they’ll level up, find loot and battle monsters! The Dungeon Master (DM) is the overseer of all the action, running through each scene calling out enemies and rewards. A DM will also set up the board, decide what treasure and foes each player should be facing off against. Another big change is the introduction of the Elder Ruine bane or boon cards. Quite how this plays out for you depends entirely on what you roll on the die. For example, the War card will mean that, for a roll between 1-10, every time you deal damage with a daily power, you can deal extra damage. Alternatively, if you roll 11-20, you will take one extra damage. It is worth noting that the game provides some amazing, stand-out monsters including the large death tyrant. Villain phase: The scary part. This is when the horrors of the dungeon get to ply their dastardly trade. The tiles are split into dugneon and cavern varieties. The Hastur-face icon shows where new monsters are placed when you reveal those tiles and, as you can see, tiles often spawn multiple monsters.

I have issues with the maps in Dungeons of the Mad Mage. When it comes to a dungeon specific module. I feel the need as a Dungeon Master running the game to have a little more visualization on the maps that the players will be finding themselves traversing. Opening it up, you’ll see there’s a tonne of stuff in this box. The game may seem a bit pricey at first look, but you certainly get a lot for your money. Your game should include: As an adventurer in Dungeons & Dragons: Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage board game, explore Undermountain in search for treasure while navigating numerous traps and ominous monsters. For beginners, there can be quite a lot to take in. However, the makers have made things a little easier by including a Sequence of Play card, which lays out how a turn should proceed, and also a suggestion of sensible Power Card choices for each player. Errata Bane/Booncards – some effects will cause a draw of these cards, telling you to resolve their bane or boon effect.

Of course, the first thing you’ll do is take out the miniatures. These, as with the rest of the series, are very well made. When buying, you’ll have the option of purchasing either the standard or premium version, with the only difference being that the premium miniatures are painted for you. Wizards of the Coast attempted to add role play aspects to each of these floors to varying degrees of success, but I found that our group really were just focused on getting from one floor to the next. A theme that becomes hard to break after even the first couple floors. But if players do like having a varied playing experience, Waterdeep Dragon Heist is still a good option as Dungeon of the Mad Mage takes awhile to complete in comparison to Dragon Heist due to one behaving like a heist film with role playing aspects galore while the other is a mega dungeon romp. Dungeon of the Mad Mage builds brilliantly on its already well-loved predecessors, introducing some impressive new features to the game. The Weakened condition is a real bummer to shake, while the Disadvantage tokens also present an interesting new challenge to the gameplay. What’s more, the nature of the tiles means you’re going to come across these monsters even more frequently than ever before, so you’re bound to be in for a fast-moving and exciting game. As an adventurer in the Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage board game, explore Undermountain in search for treasure while navigating numerous traps and ominous monsters. Waterdeep - Dungeon of the Mad Mage is a fun next entry into the now 6-game-strong D&D Adventure board game system, but it has a few warts that mean it's probably not the best game in the system to start with if you haven't played these games before. Once you get past the misprints in the rules and on some cards the game is still really solid. These aren't the types of games you buy to play a months-long campaign, but rather the games you buy when you want a lighter game that still gives you a sense of challenge, character growth and accomplishment in a relatively brisk play time. Waterdeep - Dungeon of the Mad Mage is an excellent choice if you are looking to play with new players, or younger gamers who want to be involved in a campaign driven dungeon crawl, but aren't quite ready for a game with a heavy rulebook and intricate mechanical nuances.
