Crisps: does anyone make them better than the British and Irish, and what are your favourite varieties from home or abroad? And would you bother to make your own? The archetypal crisp against which all others are judged, there have been some weird and wonderful flavours of Walkers Crisps over the years (Cajun Squirrel anyone?), alongside the timeless classics. But the market changed again, Berenstein says, roughly a decade ago. “It’s not that there’s been any kind of technological breakthrough that has allowed for these things that were previously only dreamed of,” she says. “It’s a new understanding of consumer desires and a new pace of production. It’s a bloodbath out there in the supermarkets.” New, limited-edition and mystery flavours attempt to capture the market by “promising something new and different”, she says. Flavoursome and light, these popped chips compare well to others in the genre, especially on price.
One source says: “There is just not enough room on the shelves for all these brands. The fixtures are not big enough.” A class above the standard Walkers crisps, these have a premium feel to them, with fancy flavours to match. Marketed as a healthy crisp option due to their reduced fat levels relative to standard crisps, these own-brand popped crisps are nice enough without having anything resembling a wow factor. So it stands to reason that these Marmite-flavoured crisps from Walkers are also vegan (cross-contamination risk aside), and also very tasty (if you are a lover, of course!).
