About this deal

Warning: This is the first book in a duet. It's a full-length novel with no sudden cliffhangers, but Blake and Farrah’s story continues in book two, If the Sun Never Sets (due out July 2020), which takes place five years later. HEA guaranteed in book two. It shouldn’t matter. He’s not her type—the man translates classics into Latin for fun, and his membership at the exclusive club where she bartends means he’s strictly off limits. This book had some really cute and spicy pieces as part of the romance but the ending was really predictable. This is part of a series so I’m thinking the next one will help build on this story but since I haven’t gotten there I have to base this review on only this book which is why it’s just getting an “ok” rating. In conclusion, you will enjoy this book if you enjoy well-written, slow burn romance novels with steamy heat that bring you on a journey. This book is the first in a duology, and doesn’t end in a happily ever after yet. It’s promised in book two though. I received an ARC from the author in exchange for this honest review.

Also worth noting, I listened to the book via audio and didn’t love the narrator either. I thought the voice she used for the guys was really bad and the voice for the girl main a little annoying. I think it would have been better as 2 narrators. This also impacted my rating of the book because it was difficult to get through. He fell for Farrah real hard but on New Year's Eve he went to a party where he caught up with his ex Chloe and got very drunk. Next day, he wakes up naked in a hotel room with Chloe and even though he doesn't remember the night & what happened, Chloe tells him they slept together. What starts as a physical attraction develops into something much deeper as Blake and Farrah get swept up in the magic of Shanghai—and each other. But they only have one year, and there are forces outside their control that threaten to rip them apart. We never had sex. You were wasted, and I brought you to one of the hotel suites to sleep it off. But I was too drunk to drive home myself and all the other rooms were full, so I stayed the night. We didn’t do anything. But you didn’t remember what happened when you woke up, and I was so angry with you I lied.”For someone who claims never to have touched my heart, you have an uncanny ability to rip it out and tear it apart. It’s still yours, you know. It will never belong to anyone else. Not in this life, and not in the next thousand lives. You have my heart until the earth stops spinning and the stars turn to dust. You can love it or hate it or forget all about it. But it will always be yours.”

So in the 1st book, it tells the story of how these 2 college kids (Blake & Farrah) met in Shanghai and fell in love. Hero (Blake) had been dating his ex GF & childhood BFF (Chloe) for a year and he loved her but was not IN love with her. He breaks things off and meets Farrah.year-old Farrah Lin is going to fall in love for the first time during her year abroad in Shanghai. She's sure of it. I particularly like Huang’s vivid descriptions of Shanghai and other locations in China. I felt like I was strolling the streets with the characters, exploring new places with friends, eating and enjoying myself in Disney Land, and even standing at the top of a building waiting to bungee jump with Farrah and Blake. The imagery used when the characters visit the Great Wall of China and other popular attractions paints a captivating picture and adds to the romantic atmosphere. Farrah and Blake are studying abroad in Shanghai for a year. Their group of friends is so close knit and has a ton of fun together. Without planning or really any forward thinking the two fall into a wild romance. Blake brings our Farrah’s wild side and Farrah helps Blake to be more confident in himself. The way that they encourage each other to reach for their goals is beautiful. They see promise in each other and don’t feel the demands and expectations they left in America. I like how they boost each other up and support each other’s dreams. You can either stay in your comfort zone or do something that makes your heart goddamn race. One’s safe. The other is scary as hell. You know where the safe path takes you – but it only takes you that far. The scary path? No one knows. It could be awful. Or it could be the best decision you’ll ever make.
