Additional features: Think about any additional features you may want in a printer, such as automatic duplexing (double-sided printing), scanning and copying capabilities, or the ability to print from a mobile device. Our expert team of reviewers have tested a massive range of printers, including the best laser printers and the best all-in-one printers. Whether it's inkjet, laser, or ink tank model, we take the same rigorous approach during our testing process. Requires a smart device with the Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY app installed and connected to the desired active wireless network to complete cableless setup. Text quality on the Canon’s standard settings is good. It’s almost indistinguishable from the Maxify GX5050, but looked better than the text output from both the Epson EcoTank ET-2850 and the Brother MFC-J6955DW. The latter two aren’t terrible at this, but the Canon products produce sharper looking text that’s clearly noticeable under magnification.

The C/M/Y pigment inks are not as vivid as Canon’s dye-based inks but they’re bright enough to create satisfyingly colorful images and documents. And while they’re not so good at bonding with coated photo paper, as water-based inks, this business printer is not too bad at photos. What you find is that the finish on glossy photo paper is just a little flatter than Canon’s photo printers. It was a similar story with printing business graphics. There isn’t a lot in this, but again, under magnification, I found the GX7050’s text looked a little sharper than its rivals. I preferred the colour graphics printing on the Brother MFC-J6955DW, though, and if you have a lot of colourful charts to print, that might be worth considering. I have to admit that I was expecting the larger, more expensive Maxify GX7050 to outpace or, at the very least, equal the performance of the Maxify GX5050. It was a surprise to me, then, that its performance fell some way behind, sometimes by a considerable margin. There’a lot to like about the Canon MAXIFY GX6050. It is well built, easy to use, comprehensively featured and has all-round performance that’s good enough for and home office or SMB. The main attraction of course are those big refillable ink tanks and the generous amount of ink Canon has put in the box. It means you don’t need to think about buying more for a long time and when you do, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the cost of bottled ink. Yes, it’s a high initial price for an inkjet printer, but you’ll be saving money in the long term.

Maximum features and ink

Canon Print Service is a print plug-in for Android smart devices, which enables printing from Android v4.4 - v5.0 devices to many Canon printers via a Wi-Fi network. The plug-in does not work as a standalone app. Available for free at Google Play. Printing costs are based on use of the default settings being used on both the Canon printers and competitors’ printers. This is consistent with the test conditions employed in ISO/IEC yield test for the relevant category. Considering the Maxify GX7050 is the priciest model in Canon’s Maxify GX range, I remain a little surprised that it fell behind the Maxify GX5050 in our speed tests. This wasn’t a one-off in a single test, but a consistently slower rate of printing. I would have expected it to be the same or faster than the cheaper model.

ADF scan speeds are the average of scESAT30secA in "ADF Productivitiy Measurement" test, ISO/IEC 17991:2015. When scanning or copying a certain volume of documents (approx. 150 sheets in default settings) continuously from the ADF, the printer may switch to "waiting mode" in which paper feeding stops for several tens of seconds after each scan to prohibit overheating the ADF. Colour documents and photos on photo paper also appeared clean and unblemished by horizontal lines. However, photos do look grainy, even at the highest print quality. The ink is applied flawlessly, so we can only assume it’s due to the limited print resolution. Canon’s photo printers are able optimise the resolution by spraying multiple droplets over slow moving paper to achieve a resolution of 4800x2400, whereas the Canon MAXIFY GX6050 has a resolution of 600x1200. Wireless printing requires a working network with wireless 802.11b/g/n/ac or ad capability, operating at 2.4GHz. Wireless performance may vary based on terrain and distance between the printer and wireless network clients. Copy: When copying ISO/JIS-SCID N2 (printed by inkjet printer) on A4 size plain paper using default settings.A4 document print speed on plain paper is measured based on average of ESAT in Office Category Test of ISO/IEC 24734 standard. VAT is included, but note that delivery charges are not included in the pricing calculations. Prices are subject to change due to market conditions.
