Bangle bracelets: Our Sculpey III® clay comes in a wide selection of finishes such as metallic and glitter, which are ideal for creating stunning bracelets. Light colored or translucent polymer clay will commonly discolor and darken during baking. This is not the same thing as burning. To prevent this, first make sure that your oven truly is baking at the correct temperature. Then cover your pieces to prevent the oven’s element from toasting your polymer clay project. For more info on covering clay and preventing browning, see my class on Baking Polymer Clay. 4. Using Nail Polish as a Polymer Clay Glaze Super Sculpey®: A shatter-resistant option available in three different levels of firmness, Super Sculpey® is great for professional applications. We have it in 1-ounce and 8-ounce sizes with different shade options. A better way is to create a small kink in the end of the eyepin, before you embed it into the raw clay. This way it cannot pull out after baking. Here’s an example of what I mean: Use clay to make keepsakes or items you want to treasure each season. Bake your clay creations and add glue magnets to create a decoration for your fridge or a unique Christmas ornament to hang on your tree every year. 7. Create embellishments for cards, frames and scrapbooks

For beginners with an interest in clay, our polymer clay is ideal for finding your own style as a clayer because of its easy-to-sculpt formula that stays soft until you bake it in your home oven.Another recommendation, if you’re a beginner creating a 3D sculpture for your home, is to think about what direction it will most commonly be viewed from. Then if your attempt isn’t perfect from all angles, it will at least look good in position. Carved wall tile: Make your walls unique by creating one-of-a-kind tiles. Once our polymer clay is baked, you can carve a mandala or striped design into it. Before curing your Original Sculpey® oven-bake clay project, set yourself up for success with these professional claying tips: Fimo and Sculpey Polymer Clays can be mixed or worked together to make further colours providing an endless spectrum of shades and also special effects such as caneworking and marbling..

If you want inspiration for your first polymer project, we have various ideas for clay beginners that will make you fall in love with crafting and give you the skills you need to become a pro clayer. A few of our beginner projects include: Brass rods, aluminium wire and other stronger materials can be used for this too, but it is often easier to practise clay sculpting at home with more contained shapes. Once you’ve got the hang of this, then it’s time to consider adding armatures into your repertoire. 5. Look out for a local studio Use effective tools: With whatever design you have in mind, tools will make your crafting process even easier. By using our Sculpey Tools™ Clay Tool Starter Set, you'll become a clay pro in no time! Now you’ve got your water-based clay sorted, it’s time for the creative part. Working in three dimensions will take some getting used to. However, these five useful tips will teach you how to make clay sculptures, from the initial idea to how to improve. 1. Envision the final pieceThe main benefit of using polymer clay at the beginning of your crafting journey is its unique formulation. Our Sculpey® polymer clay stays soft and flexible until it's baked. Because it remains pliable, it's a great clay for beginners to use. A common question from beginners is how to make clay figures. You may have seen more advanced sculptors create these, with extended legs. The chances are that these artists will have used armatures – long, metal skeleton structures that support the weight of the clay. If you are working without a potter’s wheel, there are still several simple ways of building up forms. Coils of clay are a good way of building up the sides of a hollow shape – laying the clay down in a spiral prevents it collapsing easily. Recesses can also be created by pinching the clay, digging out with your thumb and forefinger. 4. Avoid protruding shapes If you want to enter the world of crafting, our Sculpey® polymer clays for beginners are a great place to start. Browse our range of polymer products to find the right clay to bring your vision to life. We supply the tools, you supply the creativity! You may even want to consider trying a relief sculpture. As this involves adding forms onto a flat slab of clay, the final product won’t be viewed from all sides. It also lessens worries about weight and balance. 2. Test clay for wetness

Paint your creation: After you've baked your polymer clay, you can add additional details with acrylic paint, which will make your first project more eye-catching and unique. The stronger brands of polymer clay are durable enough that you cannot break them with your hands, even when used as thin as 1/16″ (1.5 mm). Of course to have this kind of durability the clay must be properly baked, which leads us to the next point. 2. Underbaking Polymer ClayAnother often recommended glue, especially for jewelry use, is E6000. While it can be a very good glue for some uses, it does tend to remain gummy and never fully harden on polymer clay. Many people DO have good results, but many others do not. I suspect the issue lies with the brand of polymer clay or perhaps the age of the E6000. But don’t be surprised if you find that this glue fails for you. Cover and protect your workspace: Unbaked clay may damage furniture and finished surfaces, so make sure your work area is covered. We recommend working on the Sculpey Tools™ Oven-Safe Work Mat, ceramic tile, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or aluminum foil. You can generally store unbaked polymer clay in plastic ziploc bags and any plastic box with a 1, 2, or 5 on the bottom. The floss box below works very well.
