About this deal

Although the title characters are a witch and a cat, like the popular 1970s children's book heroes Meg and Mog, "they are emphatically not the same". [4] In Hanselmann's stories, the pair are "depressed drug users struggling with life", [4] and are usually accompanied by two other regular characters, the uptight Owl and the highly volatile Werewolf Jones. [4]

One More Year is Simon Hanselmann’s latest Megg & Mogg collection, full of new subversive stoner comedy stories. Like the last one, Megg & Mogg in Amsterdam, One More Year is pretty decent though unfortunately doesn’t reach the heights of Megahex. Archived from the original on April 27, 2022. The Faceless: When she finally appears, her face is covered in a ski mask. It only comes off when she turns into a werewolf, and she shares the same face all werewolves do.I’d be tempted to call this is a working-class tale for our opiod times, since all of the young people are all always searching for money for rent and drugs, but Megg came from an heroin-addicted upper-middle class “family,” and as I said, Owl had some money. So I think of this as just an equal-opportunity addiction story which started out as a pretty funny stoner comic, and then has been moving sort of glacially to show how Megg in particular has serious issues with depression, addiction, broken relationships, all of it. The title, “Bad Gateway” gives a pretty clear indication that while Hanselmann clearly cares for these people, he knows they are imperiled, heading for doom, at least if they stay on their current path. AmelieMegg's mother, whom she has a fraught relationship with. She's mentioned often but is never seen or heard until Bad Gateway. The Friend Nobody Likes: None of Owl's friends like him very much. They see him as an annoying wet blanket and are openly malicious towards him. It's shown that they only let him into their group during high school, out of pity for him. Most comics have them, but especially Mogg and Werewolf Jones, abusing him in some fashion. What tools do you use? What are you drawing with and coloring with? It seems to vary quite a bit, but is that just a matter of technique? Hanselmann's primary English-language publisher is Fantagraphics Books. He is currently living in California with his wife and daughter. [5]

And so it should have been no surprise that, once again, Hanselmann offers up more than the wrapping suggests. There's plenty of Owl abuse, plenty of drug use, plenty of absolutely vile words shared between so-called "friends", but so too is there a deep, deep analysis of character and the dynamics between. It's easy to think of Werewolf Jones as a deadbeat dad with psychopathic/sociopahtic tendencies, because . . . he's a deadbeat dad with psychopathic/sociopathic tendencies. And it's to forget that there are other sides to his character, because his abuse of Owl and the world around him is just so relentless. But in one particular storyline, he and Megg are alone, playing music together. And there's a sweetness. A kind care and concern that you rarely see from either character. And it's nice: as nice as MegaHex can be, at least. I've lived in drug world. I know it. If anything, Megg & Mogg is too flippant and glamorous. Nothing lasts forever though. They'll find out soon.Ignored Epiphany: He's aware on some level that he isn't happy and is making his loved ones unhappy, but he's unwilling to change his ways.

In 2022, Simon announced an episode directed and produced by himself on the The Paloni Show! Halloween Special!, a TV show produced by Justin Roiland and Ben Bayouth, with characters from the Megg, Mogg & Owl comics, called Megahex, Devil’s Night. Saw this at the library. Liked what I saw at a glance. Thought: this will keep me distracted on the elliptical bike (too hot out for my usual daily walk.) Would Hurt a Child: She has no concern for her childrens' well-being. She only seems to want them because she feels entitled to have them.

Werewolf Jones

Kavorka Man: In spite of his dorky, unappealing personality and rampant substance abuse, Owl is constantly having sex. However, it's not portrayed as something admirable, as he never forms any meaningful relationships and he's contracted numerous venereal diseases. He's attracted to Megg but she's not interested, so he constantly seeks out shallow flings with other women to fill the void.

Ambiguous Gender Identity: It's at first unclear as to whether Booger is a crossdresser or a trans woman, as an early comic has them refer to themselves as male. But later issues have Booger identify as a woman, and she's Megg's go-to (and only) female friend. Regardless, she is biologically male. Part one of Hot Shave, from Megg and Mogg in Amsterdam by Simon Hanselmann. Illustration: Fantagraphics Jerkass: Every character is vain and obnoxious to some degree, but this is especially true of Werewolf Jones. Mike and Booger come across as less abrasive, but even they have their moments. Megg, Mogg and Owl is a series of comics written by Simon Hanselmann, a Dark Parody of Meg and Mog. The series primarily follows Megg, a clinically depressed witch who lives an unfulfilled life. Most stories revolve around the drug-fueled debauchery that takes up most of her time. Accompanying her on these misadventures is her boyfriend Mogg, a talking cat, and Owl, their neurotic flatmate. Also present for many of their escapades is Werewolf Jones, a mentally-ill and sex-crazed drug dealer. In the original “ Xmas 2017”, Werewolf Jones dies of an overdose at Booger’s house. In the newer comic it is mentioned that he’s found under a bridge. A friend of mine died, my bandmate, he passed away and that’s how he was found. So now I want to write about that. He was one of my best friends and so I think I wanted to change it [the WWJ death] a bit. The original strip was based on a friend of my mother’s that wanted to stay at our house and then had an overdose at someone else’s house. My mother had a lot of guilt about it I wanted to harness that kind of thing, write about that. The car and bridge stuff makes it a bit more personal. In a rare moment of tranquility, Mogg asks Megg if it's possible to stay in their state of drugged-out bliss forever. Megg cryptically answers "one more year," implying she knows their lifestyle is unsustainable and that she'll kill herself if things don't improve by then. Hanselmann's Megg, Mogg, and Owl comics are currently published in 13 languages internationally. [3]
