Description

We're smashing taboos with this exhibition, proving that it's not only fun to talk about everything from burps to belly rumbles and projectile vomit to poo, it's essential in understanding and maintaining a healthy relationship with our bodies. The exhibition is supported by Principal Sponsor, Andrex. Matt Stone, UK and Ireland marketing director of parent company Kimberly-Clark, said: Steven Leech, Curator of Exhibitions at the Science and Industry Museum, said: “From slobber to stomach acid and vomit to poo, this exhibition challenges taboos and proves it’s healthy to understand and discuss how our bodies work. Chris and Xand have also performed Operation Ouch Live to sold-out audiences in London's West End and toured Australia.

The last part of the programme describes the process of IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation), explaining that it is a procedure used to help people who cannot conceive via sexual intercourse. It describes how IVF is used to help eggs and sperm to meet, fertilise and hopefully make a baby. We know that there is nothing more engaging than a real-life experience. That's why we want to bring our BBC Children's much-loved TV brands into the real world, to deliver unforgettable experiences that educate and entertain young brilliant minds.'

Our bodies are amazing! There’s nothing we wouldn’t do to demonstrate all the wonderful ways they work and this exhibition is proof! So make sure you come along and get digested at the Science and Industry Museum – it’ll be absolutely disgusting!” Based on CBBC’s award-winning show, Operation Ouch! 21st July 2023 to 9th June 2024 – See more dates here The doctors' elusive 'cupboard of everything' and interactive lab, brought to life from the screen for the first time. The job of each digestive organ will be discovered through interactive activities that reveal the biology behind that body part. These include sniffing out the science of how food is broken down during a smelly challenge and protecting the body from bugs by fighting off bad bacteria in a game to test even the most energetic child. An interactive poo-duction line will also see visitors work together to help move waste through the large intestine and out the other end.

Sex education is not statutory at primary: parents have the right to withdraw their children from this element of the curriculum. See DfE RSHE guidance (paragraph 45-50). From the tip of the tongue to the end of the bum, explore the role of each organ in the digestive journey through interactive games and challenges, fun facts and fascinating objects from the Science Museum Group's collection. Highlights Dr Ronx said: “Whoooo, poo is my absolute favourite subject, and to be honest the only way to teach you about the digestive system is to make you part of it! From the tip of Xand's tongue to his bum, we are gonna get up close and personal. We want all your senses activated leaving you a mixture of grossed out, fascinated and basically a poo boffin like me. See you there!'

It's a truly spectacular show of super-sized science and one that we hope will leave people feeling entertained, empowered, and impressed with their grossness!' Our bodies are amazing, and one of the first questions kids often ask is the biology of how we put food in and something else comes out! If we can understand that process, we've learned something that's fundamentally important to life. So, as well as being brilliantly entertaining and of course absolutely disgusting, this exhibition is full of really amazing and essential science.' Inhibitions will be left at the door of the Doctors’ elusive ‘cupboard of everything’, where an investigation into some of the body’s funniest functions begins. Whether it’s exploring a set of super-sized gnashers, slipping down the oesophagus or investigating the innerworkings of the intestines, there will be plenty of giggle-worthy grossness to explore as visitors travel like a poo on a journey to discover where food goes when we eat. The fun of the exhibition won’t stop at the door, as the museum and BBC have partnered to bring a retail range of interactive, informative and entertaining Operation Ouch!-themed toys, games, kits and experiments to help visitors continue to explore our brilliant bodies at home. It then describes puberty and why this happens, defining it as changing from a child to a reproductive adult and explaining the changes that happen in female and male bodies: growth spurts, body hair, strength, sperm production, egg release and hormones.

Drs Xand, Chris and Ronx will pop up throughout the journey to help visitors understand more about the science of this essential bodily function. The programme talks about genitals, arousal, sexual intercourse, and fertilisation, explaining that this is something that can happen when a man and woman decide to have sex to make a baby, and that this is the most common method of fertilisation. It refers to being grown up and the role of consent in choosing to start a physical relationship. These sensory-friendly sessions are specially designed for those who prefer an adjusted environment. At these times, Operation Ouch! Food, Poo and You will have a smaller capacity, with adjusted sound levels throughout the exhibition. There will also be additional sensory activities to enjoy with our Explainers. You can find shorter clips from the programme designed for use in class, with supporting teacher notes, by following the links below: Chris and Xand grew up in London and both trained in medicine at Oxford University, specialising in infectious disease and tropical medicine. Chris is currently an Associate Professor in the division of Infection and Immunity at UCL. He has worked as a doctor in some of the harshest and strangest environments on earth and trained the Army in survival. Chris’s expedition series Operation Iceberg for BBC Two saw a group of scientists adventure into the arctic exploring the formation and life of icebergs, whilst Chris and Xand’s debut series on Channel 4 Medicine Men Go Wild, (2008) saw them travel to remote locations such as Congo and South Georgia, in a hugely adventurous journey that sought to explore the limitations of Western Medicine. The programme goes on to introduce the topic of reproduction, genitals and reproductive body parts. It explains that babies start from an egg and a sperm. This exhibition is our most epic experiment yet! Find out how your food gets mashed, pulped, squeezed and absorbed, and soak up the sights, sounds and even the smells of your incredible digestive system! Renowned for their ability to engage, educate and entertain young viewers by conducting outrageous experiments, the trio have provided unique inspiration for the exhibition. They fully immersed themselves in the lively, interactive and playful adventure, taking part in key highlight experiences, including: Internationally renowned experiential design and production company, Sarner, are working with the Science and Industry Museum, BBC and 141 to bring the exhibition to life through innovative set design and pioneering displays. In this Operation Ouch programme, Dr Chris, Dr Xand and Dr Ronx explain how babies are made. Starting with relationships and families, they describe the combinations of humans that can make up a family: mothers and fathers, sisters, brothers, dogs, two fathers, two mothers, foster families.

The museum and BBC have also partnered to bring a retail range of interactive, informative and entertaining Operation Ouch!-themed toys, games, kits and experiments to help visitors continue to explore our brilliant bodies at home. Operation Ouch, Chris and Xand’s double BAFTA & Broadcast award-winning series for CBBC, continues to delight audiences around the world, with Series 12 being filmed in 2023. Throughout the series, the twins create fun and often disgusting experiments to help kids learn how the human body works. The programme results in fan mail from around the world from a young audience who want to know, above all, what they need to do to become doctors. Their second Operation Ouch tour of Australia this January was a huge hit and they hope to bring the fun to their British fans with a tour in 2018.
