Description

Books play a very important role in the process of raising children, as well as in teaching them about the world around them. The first filter in the selection of books for children is made by the parents (guardians). Therefore, it is important to choose quality content and inspirational stories. On the other hand, books greatly facilitate the process of learning and explaining new concepts and terms through the use of appropriate language structures and images that not only stimulate children's imagination, but also help them to understand certain contents more easily. She wakes up Sam and together they set out on a mission to ask advice on how to make Poppy finally succumb. They visit the bees who are snuggling down nice and comfy in their honeycomb, a frog who sips on a mug of fly milk before he nods off, and a colony of ants who suggest Poppy read a good book which may help her reach her Dreamland goal. Finally their journey takes them to a family of non-hibernating mice who welcome them inside their home and invite them to stay with them for the winter. Will Poppy and Sam be able to stay awake until Spring arrives just like the mice? The sweet stories about Poppy and Sam’s adventures on the farm have been favourites with young children since the series started over thirty years ago, and now the much-loved series has been relaunched for a new generation to enjoy. Winter is fast approaching and best friends Poppy and Sam are carefully gathering food for hibernation time. Poppy says good night to Sam and off she goes to nestle in for a long winter's nap. Poppy tosses and turns and becomes upset because she has insomnia. Whatever shall she do? She needs to sleep!

With Poppy and Sam, young readers are introduced to new words, colours, concepts - and the joy of reading. Join Poppy, Sam and their friends on their next farmyard adventure! There is something for a range of ages, from lift the flap or touch and feel for the youngest readers to puzzles and pen control for preparing for school with the Wipe Clean books.

What makes this picture book a great choice for any family with children is the interesting way in which the author introduces the term hibernation, using cute scenes, the author helps children to fully understand the meaning of this term, as well as which animals spend the winter in hibernation(What I do not like about it is that some of the facts stated are not entirely accurate.). My daughter was very worried that the poor animals will be very hungry if they slept that much. There are some funny parts like the warm milk that is suggested by Clement, turns out to be fly milk. Fall colors and some green, accompany this comic style picture book that would be a better fit for younger kids and can teach them about animals that hibernate. The text is set in speech bubbles and would be more suitable for reading out loud then for a beginning reader. Poppy and Sam and the Search for Sleep by Cathon is definitely a book that deserves to be considered and chosen as a great addition to the family library. Not only will they be introduced to new terms, but they will also find out more about wildlife and animals in general,as well as the meaning of the seasons and the changes that follow each season.

Poppy and Sam live on Apple Tree Farm where every day brings a new adventure. Along with Rusty the Dog, Curly the Pig, Woolly the Sheep and all their other farmyard friends, the two children love to explore the world, whether they are feeding the animals, collecting eggs, playing outside or getting messy finger painting. Poppy, A character of color, is having a hard time falling asleep for the long winter sleep; hibernation. Her friend Sam, a panda bear, is not having any trouble at all but helps her by talking to all their animal and insect friends who do hibernate. They all give Poppy advice on what helps them to hibernate. There is a visit to a bee hive, a hole in the ground where the frog Clement hibernates, and the ant hill. None of them have helpful suggestions for Poppy though. It is not until they find out their friend Simone the mouse does not hibernate, that they have a great place to stay occupied, and that’s where they fall asleep.

Lastly, the readers will find several strategies skillfully embedded into the story, that will help your child to fall asleep easier at night, such as counting, lullabies or reading goodnight stories.
