If you’re looking for an all-in-one lawn feed, weed and moss killer then Evergreen’s 4 in 1 Complete Lawn Feed gets my recommendation. Westland SafeLawn contains grass seed which helps to fill in any sparse areas and create a denser sward. The grass seed blend is made up of creeping red fescue and dwarf perennial ryegrass which is ideal for most home lawns. Lawn feed isn’t exactly food; it’s more a combination of mineral nutrients that help your grass to grow. Just like other plants, grass needs a regular supply of nutrients to keep it growing healthily. The main nutrients needed are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), each of which provide your lawn with different benefits. Potassium helps to build plant cells, which means more resistance against diseases and drought, and is best applied in spring or autumn. Nitrogen aids with leaf growth, resulting in a deep green colour when your lawn is happiest. Nitrogen-heavy lawn feeds are best applied when grass puts out new growth, so in the spring and summer.

If you’re replacing or creating a new lawn, either by laying new turf or sowing grass seed, it’s best to spread the fertiliser directly into the soil.

Reviews

Westland SafeLawn is for anyone who loves their lawn. But, it’s especially great for anyone with children or pets. If you love your lawn, but you’re put off using chemicals due to safety concerns with children and pets, Westland SafeLawn is the product for you. It is a fertiliser made using only natural ingredients and less iron to reduce the risk of staining and transferring of the product onto hard surfaces. This means children and pets can safely use the lawn after application. For the best results, MOOWY claims this fertiliser should be used regularly every six to eight weeks, along with mowing your lawn every week. That said, the high nitrogen content makes us a little cautious when using this product on young or recently sown lawns. MOOWY gives an all-round nutrient boost for your grass, no matter what the season. It’s a slow-release fertiliser that keeps working for 60 days, strengthening plant roots and boosting the chlorophyll in your grass thanks to its high nitrogen content. MOOWY suggests mowing your lawn no shorter than 5cm before spreading the granules evenly and then lightly watering in, regardless of the time of year you’re using it. You should see greener grass within seven days, although bear in mind that there’s no weed or moss killer in this feed. If you’re looking for a straight-up, seasonal granular lawn feed then Scotts Spring/Summer Lawn Builder Lawn Food and Autumn/Winter Lawn Food has to be my favourite. Scotts have developed a high Nitrogen lawn food for spring/summer when grass growth is at its best. They also have a high Potassium autumn/winter food for strong root development to strengthen the lawn against the stresses of winter.

The total Nitrogen content is 36% which is pretty high. That said, because it’s a soluble product the risk of scorching the grass is fairly small. Still, you’ll want to make sure mix it accurately and don’t apply it in long periods of hot, dry weather. To keep your lawn strong and healthy all year round, we recommend feeding your lawn with SafeLawn every 3-4 weeks from February to September

Westland SafeLawn builds up the condition of your grass, promoting soil health making it a more stronger, resilient and healthier to outcompete weeds and moss. There is no scorch risk when using SafeLawn too due to its natural mode of action. This means it won’t yellow lawn after application. You can apply Westland SafeLawn every three weeks between February and September, but it’s advised not to use during either a drought or when the ground is frosted over. This 5.25kg bag should provide 150m² of lawn coverage. Both fertilisers are slow-release, which means they’ll release nutrients into the soil slowly, giving your grass a steady supply of nutrients for up to 8 weeks. The term, ‘Poor Health’ is vague. There could be any number of reasons for an unhealthy lawn like; soil compaction, excess moss, lots of thatch etc.

Liquid lawn feed is perfect for smaller gardens or those with no hose, and it can be reapplied every six weeks throughout the summer. As this is purely a lawn feed it won’t kill off weeds or moss, so it can be used in combination with another feed. A 1-litre bottle of Miracle-Gro Evergreen should cover 100m² of your grass. For new lawns, you’d normally have to wait 6 months before applying a regular lawn feed as the high nitrogen content could damage the new grass. However, because the Nitrogen content is so low in this product, you can apply it without damaging the new grass and it’ll keep improving that all-important root development. Seaweed has long been used as a soil improver, thanks to its natural content of nitrogen, potassium and phosphates. Endorsed by the Royal Horticultural Society, this liquid seaweed stimulant from Plantworks contains organic seaweed extract that improves plant development by increasing chlorophyll production. The feed also contains extra iron from sustainably harvested kelp extract. It’s a 100% natural fertiliser that breaks down into the soil to feed the roots. As the grass becomes stronger your lawn will start to out-compete weeds and moss, and the special friendly bacteria in SafeLawn converts any dead moss and thatch into nutrients, which helps to feed the grass.A 2.8kg box should be enough to cover a 80sqm lawn (that’s about the size of 8 standard car parking spaces!) This product is safe for children and pets, however, it’s good practice to wash hands and skin after use and store all garden products out of reach in a dry, frost-free place. Although it depends on the type of lawn you have and what condition it’s in, an easy rule to adhere to is feeding once each season or even just once a year with a slow-release fertiliser. If you opt for the former, your feeding schedule might look like this: The food is sprayed onto the grass and enters the plant through the leaves. As a result, the grass gets an almost immediate shot of Nitrogen. This gives it a good boost of lush, green colour. This is an excellent product for giving your lawn a boost of nitrogen when it needs it. However, I wouldn’t use it as my main fertiliser because the Nitrogen content is too high.

This lawn feed is particularly effective when used in the autumn through until spring for ridding your lawn of worm casts too, as the slimy remnants can make mowing the grass rather muddy and slippery. Phosphorus (or phosphate) helps with root development, as strong roots mean less disease and fewer pests. It’s best applied in early spring or autumn. Also, it’s only meant to be applied twice a year, so I’d apply it in April and September when there’s plenty of moisture and conditions for growth are at their best. It’s easy to apply but needs watering in so if it doesn’t rain, you’ll want to get the sprinklers on. The best lawn feed you can buy in 2023 1. Westland SafeLawn Child and Pet Friendly Natural Lawn Feed: Safest lawn feed A. You should remove moss and weeds before hand, using SafeLawn can prevent moss and weeds returningThis higher Nitrogen content does have its risks though. It can scorch your lawn if applied in long periods of hot, dry weather. Which means you need to be careful about when you apply it. In mid-spring (late March to April), when the soil is moist or when rain is expected, you can feed your lawn with a product that contains weed and moss control. It will kill off any moss that’s grown over winter, and help accelerate grass growth after the cold months. Once the weeds are under control, it’s fine to use a lawn feed that solely feeds the grass.
