Description

Defender® Ridge Spikes have 2 rows of stainless steel pins that fan out. With this angle of pins, the bird and seagull ridge deterrent will stop birds from landing on the apex of any roof. How do ridge spikes stop seagulls landing? Along the base of of each strip of spikes there are snap-off points making it easy to fit the spikes in small areas to the exact size required. The polycarbonate base of the bird spike means that you can bend a spike along a shallow curve. Be aware that this will increase the space between the spike points so may be less effective against target birds. Defender® Seagull Spikes will get rid of seagulls from a ledge up to 20 cm (8 inches). If the ledge is wider, you can add a second row of spikes, leaving as small a gap as possible between the tops of the pins. If the seagulls are trying to nest in or on your chimney, it is important to stop them before they begin to nest. The nesting debris the seagulls use to build a nest can cause fires if the chimney is operational. In this instance we would recommend Defender® Chimney Pot Spikes. How do seagull spikes work? All birds are protected by the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981. The control of birds in the UK is permitted but is governed by the UK ‘General Licences’. There are four versions – one each for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland as terms vary.

Nuisance gulls are a serious problem, but seagulls are a protected species. Legal, humane strategies are required to control pestilential populations of seagulls. Seagull Spikes from Bird B Gone are a safe and effective way to discourage seagulls from roosting on roofs, ledges, and other narrow commercial and residential locations. Seagull Spikes to the Rescue 1. What are Seagull Spikes? There are a number of seagull control and proofing solutions that can be effective and will safeguard your property, staff, visitors and the public. The Defender® Bird Spike range has a spike suitable for pigeons, seagulls and even small garden birds like sparrows. Deciding what bird your issue is caused by is the first step. We have a range of spikes for pigeons - these will stop pigeons and like sized birds. Our spikes for seagulls have taller pins to allow for the gulls longer legs. It is important to remember that they will also work for pigeons. We also have a spike for small birds - stopping small garden birds like sparrows and starlings but also the larger birds like pigeons and seagulls too. There is some more in-depth reading on risks associated with bird droppings and cleaning here - Cleaning Bird Droppings Information

How to install Defender® Chimney Pot Spikes

The Defender® Stainless Steel Ridge Spike has 2 rows of 15 cm (6 inches) long 304 Grade stainless steel pins. They protrude from the UV Stabilised Polycarbonate base of the spike at 2 different angles. This spread of pins acts as a bird deterrent and stops seagulls and birds from landing on the apex of the roof. Gulls are expert scavengers and have probably moved to urban areas due to waste and litter being a readily available food source. Urban rooftops are an ideal replacement for their natural nesting habitat so gull proofing likely nesting points will prevent your property being used. Using a specially trained bird of prey as a deterrent is also an effective means to deter gulls. The spikes are sold in two foot sections, twenty five sections per box totaling 50 linear feet. Spikes are five inches long, fabricated specifically to deter seagulls and other large birds. The flexible base of the spike strip is 1 ½ ” wide and can be glued, nailed, screwed or tied down to most surfaces. These spikes carry an industry leading 10 year warranty from the manufacturer. They are non-corrosive and require virtually no maintenance. Use your fingers to press the polycarbonate base of the strip down firmly on the surface to which it is to be applied (that you have previously primed) so that rivets of glue come up through the holes in the base. Do not attempt to secure a spike by pushing on the spike points. Do not disturb the spike for at least 24 hours after gluing. Use Surface Activator (BS365) to prepare polished surfaces such as metal or plastic prior to priming.

Add extra rows behind the first if needed. Leave as small a gap as possible between the rows; the pins should be almost touching to prevent the pigeons or seagulls from gaining access. Leave no gap bigger than 2.5 cm anywhere to prevent a pigeon or seagull from gaining a foothold.Where less than an entire 500mm strip is required, grooves set perpendicular to the base of the strip are provided for easy reduction in size. Simply snap off as much as you require.

Step 1 - Clean the Area: Before starting your Defender® Ridge Spikes installation you need to make sure that the apex ridge tiles are clean and free from moss, lichen, bird droppings and any dust or debris. This is to make sure that the silicone has a clean surface to adhere to. If soiled with droppings, we would always recommend dampening down the area with a disinfectant spray like Germ Clear™ Bird Droppings Disinfectant Spray. Once this has been left to soak into the droppings, you can use a scraper, stiff brush, warm soapy water and a cloth to make sure the roof apex is clean and dry. Ideally leave the area for 24 hours to ensure it is fully dry. This tried and tested Defender® Seagull Deterrent Spike is the toughest gull deterrent on the UK and worldwide market and comes with a 25-Year “No Rust” Warranty when installed in the UK. This seagull spike has been made in the UK with the best quality materials that will withstand the most persistent and strong seagulls. The spike pins are made from 304 Grade stainless steel and are inserted by hand to ensure they are securely fixed in place. Each pin is inserted into a Durolon UV Stabilised Polycarbonate base. This ensures the spikes do not become damaged due to the adverse effects of extreme weather. Seagull Deterrent Spikes Made in the UK The Defender® Seagull Deterrent Spike can be installed by anyone who has a small amount of DIY knowledge and safe access to the area that needs protection. Always prime the surface to be adhered to with Spike Adhesive and our Disposable Priming Brush (BS335), regardless of the composition of the surface. This ensures a long-life bond. For gull control to be effective, it should be planned around the gull breeding season to ensure gull problems are prevented before property damage, injury or health and safety issues occur. Visibility (base) – Low profile base (5mm high) will not be seen from the ground level looking upwards
