Importantly, the new version of the “SLV” has restored it to its theatrical matting – the movie was cropped to the old TV screen ratio of 1.33: 1 for broadcast (and for several subsequent home video releases), turning Wise’s widescreen compositions into a nightmare of forced zooms and pan-and-scanning. At least now this version of the film is restored to its proper ratio. Because the heavily DNR’d/over-sharpened 2009 editions have been the default way fans have seen these movies for the last 13 years, on both Blu-ray and streaming services, many have little-to-no experience with the films’ original presentation — seen on LaserDisc, VHS, and DVD up until 2009. music throughout the film). It's just incredible. The free-flowing space, the precision clarity, the perfectly balanced low end...it's a Trekkie's, and They still didn’t fix the nav console “radar screen” during the approaching V’ger sequence, where it’s wavy and looks like the piece of paper that it probably is. They could’ve digitally smoothed it out to be round the way it’s supposed to look. I had pointed this out to Daren this summer hoping they would be able to tweak it. Two years ago, we interviewed the film’s visual effects supervisor, the legendary Douglas Trumbull, who mentioned that the original 65mm film elements that he and his crew shot could possibly be hiding in a Paramount vault somewhere. Based on Fein’s comments, it certainly seems like they found something. Teases of new CGI renders

The newly restored, definitive version of the first big-screen adventure is presented in 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision™ and HDR-10, as well as Dolby Atmos®. Also includes access to a Digital copy of the film and the following new and legacy bonus content:

Vulcan has no moon, Miss Uhura

You can either have completely new characters in the lead roles (imagine George Clooney/Jon Hamm/Matt Damon as the starship captain, for example) or Picard, Seven and Janeway drafted due to the alleged Borg angle. In both cases, also have a big-name Hollywood star as the Starfleet Intelligence agent leading the mission, who may or may not reveal the Borg connection and/or the V’Ger angle to the captain until much later. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country arrives with two versions of the film on 4K: the original theatrical cut, which was also available in the previous 2009 Blu-ray (and what most people have seen on streaming services to date), and the longer director’s cut last released in the 2004 Special Collector’s Great news. It is great they found the original 65 mm elements. It appears as if the final restoration efforts and tweaks will yield a movie that will visually equal that, if not surpass that of Blade Runner :)

That said, large swaths of the classic Trek TV series aren't even available in HD, much less in 4K or HDR. All three seasons of The Original Series and all seven of The Next Generation got Blu-ray and digital HD releases in recent years, as well as Enterprise and The Animated Series, and all the new Paramount+ shows are in HD. But Deep Space Nine and Voyager are still only available in standard definition. While the first four remastered films hit 4K and Blu-ray in 2021, we now have the complete collection — including the Director’s Edition of The Motion Picture and Director’s Cuts of The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country— fully restored and ready to replace the in-our-opinion highly-inferior scans released more than a decade ago. Return to Tomorrow (6:04): More discussion on the production deadlines and rigors, visual effects work, and rebuilding visual effects With fans and even critics constantly reappraising the original film, Paramount Pictures – with the encouragement of two members of Robert Wise’s production company, David C. Fein and Michael Matessino – allowed Wise and his team to revisit the movie in 2001, reconstructing it to finally adhere more closely to Wise’s original vision.

This disc’s menus features the original Bob Peak artwork. The disc itself includes the following special features…I didn’t watch the whole film, only some sequences that I know inside and out, but the restoration has in fact left me a little bewildered at what they still didn’t manage to do, or what still feels kinda off. As in this post, fretting over the details of a missing travel pod on a clustery, overly-complex model in tight focus are unimportant unless your doing a jarring jump-cut to close-up of the travel pod. In the new 2022 editions, because the films have been rescanned from the original picture, those 2009-era modifications are not even part of the discussion anymore — restoring the look of each picture to something much closer to the original theatrical presentation. The Star Trek: The Motion Picture – The Director’s Edition: The Complete Adventure Limited Edition is a 3-disc set here in the States that includes the DE in 4K, a newly-authored 4K of the previously-released Theatrical Cut as well as the Special Longer Version (included via seamless branching), and a Blu-ray full of bonus content that I’m told includes basically everything ever created and released for the film on home video. (I’m awaiting confirmation of the exact contents from the studio.) But it does NOT include a Blu-ray of the DE itself, nor are Blu-rays of the Theatrical and SLV versions included. The DE is available separately on Blu-ray, and obviously the Theatrical Cut Blu-ray was included in the original 4-Movie Collection from last year.
