About this deal

Eighteen-year-old Mallory Greenleaf is no longer interested in chess, not since her hypercompetitive dad left—the game calls up painful memories. But she grudgingly agrees to play in a charity tournament as a favor to best friend Easton Peña. After she unexpectedly beats current world champion Nolan Sawyer, she’s offered a fellowship that will prepare her to play professionally. Even though Mallory doesn’t want to play anymore, she needs the money that winning would provide; she’s delayed college to support her family, since her mother is chronically ill with rheumatoid arthritis and is unable to work regularly. The more time she spends with Nolan, the more Mallory comes to like and respect him—and the more time she spends playing chess, the more she remembers how much she loved it. But when she learns that Nolan has been keeping a big secret from her, she isn’t sure if she’ll be able to move past it to build a relationship with him. Filled with the author’s signature humor, well-developed characters, and realistic conflicts, plus the fully realized setting of competitive chess, this captivating romance will delight teen readers as well as Hazelwood’s adult fans. Mallory and Nolan are both cued white; there is some racial diversity among the supporting cast. Mallory and Easton are queer. This book follows the journey of two broken souls, brought together by fate and haunted by their pasts. The characters were very beautifully crafted, with depth and authenticity. The chemistry between them is palpable, and their journey towards healing is both heart-wrenching and heartwarming.

Georgia was for sure stubborn but I don’t blame her she went through the only disappoint and betrayal from those closest to her. Regardless of that, she was headstrong and resilient and I loved that about her. Esp the close relationship she had with Scarlett. The romance? Pure bliss, I can definitely feel that what they were having is an otherworldly passionate love that I don't think I feel in every other book I read so far. A beautiful, heartfelt story with surprising depth. Grab tissues and settle in for the long haul because you won't be able to put this one down, and I guarantee you'll finish it crying. But please don't let that stop you from reading this beautifully written, emotionally charged story that now sits on my Favorites Shelf. It's truly an experience - a deeply rooted, character-based story that pushed all my buttons. The title, The Last Letter, is woven into the storyline in more ways than one. I found myself sitting long after I finished - thinking about this story and its relevance. Please avoid all spoilers and read this book. I don't think it'll be the same if you know how the story plays out when you begin. But I think I have a special fondness for Jameson, that dashing Yank of a pilot who won Scarlett, Georgia’s grandmother’s heart during WWII. In Yarros’ latest romance novel, a young woman hires a handsome but infuriating writer to complete her late great-grandmother’s half-finished book.

Scarlett and Constance — my loves. The true definition of sisterly love 🫂 they both went through their share of pain during a time of such angst in their own ways. Both lived through a war where not everyday is guaranteed (it’s as if you’re living on borrowed time) and living through expectations and such loss — it felt so very surreal and both deserved so much better. But somehow you can find solace in how their fate unraveled. Just know Constance will always have a place in my mind and heart. Oh yeah, make sure you have Kleenex near by - because the road to happiness is full of obstacles, but it's totally worth it!)

You have no idea how much I adore them. Scarlett and Constance are each other's shadow who were always there for each other to protect and to love. The things they both did to see the other happy especially the sacrifices Constance made for Scarlett 😭 there's nothing like this sister bond. Its beyond everything in this world. The build up to their relationship was achingly beautiful.Their love made so much possible and felt like a love that undeniably would stand the testament of time — simply undying and that “lives in your veins” and I’m crying again ugh they way they spoke to each other was so intimately beautifull and I just wanna know where can I find myself a Jameson?? 🥲 i beg your pardon? what was epic about ur very bland love story if u can even call it that. where was the rare??? all i felt was attraction 🙄 it would be an abomination to compare it to scarjame's love. the 5 stars are solely for scarjame.Second point that I didn’t like: it’s written in the first person POV, and those who know me know that I don’t like that. Here we alternate between the hero and the heroine, at a rate of one chapter each in general, with one of the letters they exchanged during the months before their meeting as a chapter opening. The name of the character who’s going to speak may be written as a chapter header, it took me several lines to determine who was “I”. Their love is once in a very rare lifetime thing. For them it happened. For us it might be tragic in the end. For them it was epic and pure and is living in our hearts forever. I fell in love with them when they met on that street where Jameson fell in love Scarlett's blue eyes. Their love and romance was so captivating and mesmerisingly beautiful, precious and everything you would want for yourself no matter which ending it will have. It was tender and comfortingly sweet and it was scorching. INCREDIBLE, PASSIONATE AND TIMELESS JUST LIKE THEM.
