About this deal

It’s great to be at one with nature when you go camping, forgetting about work or what’s on the television that night and enjoying the peace and quiet of the countryside or making your own entertainment. However, it’s always important to have access to some kind of power supply to help get your camping essentials going – such as airbed pumps and an electric hook up for the electrics inside your caravan. Your supply cable will need to conform to standard BS EN 60309-2. This specifies a PVC/PVC flexible cable with three cores, each core ideally being 2.5mm. Hook up cables are therefore fatter than your standard domestic power cords. Cable care and storage

Products are often marketed by terms such as “water-resistant” which can be vague and doesn’t make it clear about how much water a product can be subjected to before it gets dangerous. An IP rating is a solution. Typical power consumption shown. Varies for different appliance models. Electric hook up top 5 safety tipsOverall this is a strong, robust and durable cable. It has a water-resistant rating of IP44 to give you added peace of mind. In terms of safety, it conforms to BS 7671 and EN 60309 and is CE approved. Do not keep your cables wrapped in polythene. It is likely condensation will appear which should be avoided.

Using them with your caravan is very much the same as using electricity at home. The main difference is that because you are using a mobile unit, there is a higher risk of mistakes being made. Regularly perform your own safety inspections and arrange for a fully qualified technician to run safety tests periodically. You can also avoid accidents by investing in an RCD or residual-current device (also known as a residual-current circuit breaker). This is a special device that will switch off an electrical circuit that is unsafe. The Equipment You Need and Where to Get It Your designated power supply point may be on or next to your pitch, or it could be one or two pitches away from yours, requiring a long cable to reach it. How much power is supplied? The cable is constructed by in-house qualified electrical engineers so you can trust its quality. The cable ends have been terminated which reinforces the cable to lengthen the life of the extension lead. This stops the cable from loosening, so you get more use out of it. Ideally, you want a hookup cable that is easy to use every time. You have enough to worry about when you go caravanning, so the last thing you want to do is have to spend hours trying to troubleshoot and issue when the best cables allow you to just plug in to use. IP RatingWe recommend that you avoid purchasing caravan hook up cables that have a rating lower than IP44. Cable Rating Here are some of the factors to consider when choosing between electric hook up cables for your caravan or motorhome: Cable Length div>

The cable is 15 metres long, which means that you can reach the hookup point without having to overstretch the wires which can cause damage or be more of a trip hazard. When you hold the lead, you can feel the quality, and it has a weightiness so it won’t just be blown away, but it’s still light enough to move around easily. Although mains leads are not essential for a successful caravan, motorhome or campervan trip, it can make your time on the road that little bit more relaxing, comfortable and enjoyable. Some of these lower quality leads are made in people’s homes so they haven’t been produced at a commercial level which could mean that they haven’t been properly safety tested. They may look good on the outside, but there’s no way of telling if they’ve been wired correctly on the inside. WarrantyThis means that from a safety perspective that it can be seen by people walking past even if the grass is slightly long. Dark leads aren’t the end of the world, but it means that they’re harder to see and could be a trip hazard. Ease of Use Most campervans and motorhomes have a 12V leisure battery onboard which will offer enough power to run a small fridge, mobile phones and LED lights for a couple of days. This secondary power unit is only brought along on our trip if we have the drive-away awning with us. A normal kettle uses 2000W, or 8.7A. Therefore, we recommended above that you take special low-watt appliances. That one household item would use all the power from a 10A hook up.
