Artie has a built-in Wifi server so can be used anywhere without requiring an internet connection. The easy-to-use drag and drop programming can be used on a Mac, PC, tablet or smartphone and offers four modes of play; pre-programmed shapes, games, art for colouring and freeform coding. Kids can choose their own adventure from the story library–exploring the planets, colors, ABCs, the inside of a plant cell, Earth’s biomes, and others. The robot comes with pre-made accessories, or you can add your own Lego or craft to get Mochi ready for the adventure. Another batteries-not-required coding board game is Robot Turtles, which teaches programming fundamentals to kids ages 4 and up. A real robot also offers some neat science lessons along the way. I love the idea of Artie 3000, but the user interface could definitely be easier to use. The drag and drop system isn’t as smooth as it could be. However, with a little practice, it’s ok to use. Syd is 6 and she managed to do it by herself after some coaching. (She’s pretty patient, though). Syd was beyond proud of herself for mastering Artie 3000 all by herself – I took this photo to show her dad what she’d done! Instead of the easy follow the lead control option, this language did require a bit of fine motor control. My six—year-old daughter attempted to follow the on-screen tutorial program by dragging the needed icons from the left toolbox into the right program. She struggled a bit at first to drop the tools into the repeat command. We spent ages trying in vain to get Artie 3000 to connect with my MacBook Pro. In the end, we resorted to Syd’s Windows laptop, which worked first time. I guess Artie isn’t a fan of fruity gadgets! Once he was connected, Syd and I set to work on the first of the 3 lessons included with Artie3000. As the video shows, you can choose to select the pre-installed commands, or do the actual coding yourself. We did the pre-installed command first, then Syd and I tried our hand at coding. The limiting factor for each of the steps was the Artie Max robots ability to turn and to maintain itself in space. I was able to expand the size of the arrow, was able to create a narrower arrow, but I was not able to create a crisp corner like the image. Despite the limitations, I truly enjoyed the experience with my kids and with the STEM activity.
