About this deal

Artie has a built-in Wifi server so can be used anywhere without requiring an internet connection. The easy-to-use drag and drop programming can be used on a Mac, PC, tablet or smartphone and offers four modes of play; pre-programmed shapes, games, art for colouring and freeform coding. Kids can choose their own adventure from the story library–exploring the planets, colors, ABCs, the inside of a plant cell, Earth’s biomes, and others. The robot comes with pre-made accessories, or you can add your own Lego or craft to get Mochi ready for the adventure. Another batteries-not-required coding board game is Robot Turtles, which teaches programming fundamentals to kids ages 4 and up. A real robot also offers some neat science lessons along the way. For example, Dash doesn’t actually turn his wheels, he just spins one faster than the other. Your child can set the speeds for each wheel individually, getting them to understand the physics behind this through play and experimentation.

For those kids who might be a little less analytical, there’s STEAM, which adds the Arts to STEM for more artistic creativity. Perfect fit:We have specially designed the case to suit your Educational Insights Artie 3000 the Coding & Drawing Robot! I love the idea of Artie 3000, but the user interface could definitely be easier to use. The drag and drop system isn’t as smooth as it could be. However, with a little practice, it’s ok to use. Syd is 6 and she managed to do it by herself after some coaching. (She’s pretty patient, though). Syd was beyond proud of herself for mastering Artie 3000 all by herself – I took this photo to show her dad what she’d done! Author Sophie Deen worked at Code Club, alongside Google and the UK Department for Education, to help introduce the new coding curriculum in primary schools. For our next test, we selected menu along the top of the App and selected the Artie Max UI. Instead of the easy follow the lead control option, this language did require a bit of fine motor control. My six—year-old daughter attempted to follow the on-screen tutorial program by dragging the needed icons from the left toolbox into the right program. She struggled a bit at first to drop the tools into the repeat command. We spent ages trying in vain to get Artie 3000 to connect with my MacBook Pro. In the end, we resorted to Syd’s Windows laptop, which worked first time. I guess Artie isn’t a fan of fruity gadgets! Once he was connected, Syd and I set to work on the first of the 3 lessons included with Artie3000. As the video shows, you can choose to select the pre-installed commands, or do the actual coding yourself. We did the pre-installed command first, then Syd and I tried our hand at coding. The limiting factor for each of the steps was the Artie Max robots ability to turn and to maintain itself in space. I was able to expand the size of the arrow, was able to create a narrower arrow, but I was not able to create a crisp corner like the image. Despite the limitations, I truly enjoyed the experience with my kids and with the STEM activity. Beyond personalising imagiCharm, the imagiLabs app helps girls learn Python coding principles through interactive tutorials.

Coding is based on the powerful Python language, which is a professional level tool but popular as it is not complex to learn. It’s a staple of the Computer Science educational curriculum. Made of aluminum, it features intelligent functions such as voice control (for example, “Move forward”, “Dance”) and smart camera, with built-in ultrasonic sensor, obstacle sensors, buzzer sensor module, and receiver. Learning Resources MagiCoders Coding Critters brings a creative, sensorial and magical perspective to coding and STEM. With a spell book you can cast spells on Blazer the Dragon or Skye the Unicorn and you can also design your own limitless coding challenges with the 22-piece pet playset (including a treasure chest, large ball, fireballs, a castle piece and many more). It’s great for teaching children spatial awareness, sequential logic and basic coding skills. Looking for a calming, screen-free activity for the kids? These tactile toys will focus attention and soothe the senses. With Mindful Maze boards from Hand2mind, little ones can use their fingers to move through various patterns—including waves, rainbows, and stars—as they pace their breathing to each task. Dimpl Pops, by Fat Brain Toys, offer a different sensory satisfaction. The irresistible pop of colorful silicone bubbles makes exercising fine motor skills as fun as it is relaxing. (Mindful Maze, ages Pre-K to 8; Dimpl Pops, ages 3+) One of our favorite and innovative kids’ games for the iPad and now Fire tablet is Osmo, which uses a fun Montessori-like method to teach via physical objects—not normally what you’d expect from an tablet game.

Not requiring batteries or complex construction, these colorful character-led problem-solving board games are suitable for kids aged 3-8, and should stimulate a child’s curiosity, creativity and critical-thinking skills. This Build, Code and Play Toy includes 847 Lego pieces that kids can build and rebuild into five cool multifunctional models—motorized robots, models and creations with distance, color and tilt sensor technologies. On the surface it might look like a standard RC car, complete with mechanum wheels and six 100w brushless motors, but there’s much more to it than that. There’s a creative focus, and that starts when you open the box and find the S1 in 107 pieces ready for you to build.
