Description

Essential Cell Biology, provides an up-to-date introduction to the fundamental concepts of cell biology as well as rapidly growing fields such as stem cell biology, development, and cancer. It has 20 chapters By Bruce Alberts, Dennis Bray, Karen Hopkin, Alexander Johnson, Julian Lewis, Martin Raff, Keith Roberts, Peter Walter. Cell Biology lies at the intersection of molecular biology, biochemistry, and structural biology. It is a large field and there are many excellent books written on specialized topics within cell biology. The reason I’m writing this review is because I believe that the 5th edition of Essential Cell Biology is the premier text to learn cellular/molecular biology as an undergrad or med student.

Julian Lewis received his DPhil from the University of Oxford and is an Emeritus Scientist at the London Research Institute of Cancer Research UK.Keith Roberts received his PhD from the University of Cambridge and was Deputy Director of the John Innes Centre, Norwich. He is currently Emeritus Professor at the University of East Anglia. Martin Raff received his MD from McGill University and is at the Medical Research Council Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology and Cell Biology Unit at University College London. David Morgan received his PhD from the University of California, San Francisco, and is a professor in the Department of Physiology as well as the vice dean for research for the School of Medicine. Dave is a fellow of the Royal Society of London. In addition, they provide a greatly expanded Question Bank, several new student assessment tools, as well as more than 130 narrated videos to guide reader as they progress through the chapters. In addition, we have included books in Spanish and Portuguese, so that you have the opportunity to read books on Cell Biology in these languages.

Bruce Alberts received his PhD from Harvard University and is the Chancellor’s Leadership Chair in Biochemistry and Biophysics for Science and Education, University of California, San Francisco. He was the editor in chief of Sciencemagazine from 2008 until 2013, and for 12 years he served as president of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (1993–2005). Jennifer Fairman is the Founder and Principal of Fairman Studios, LLC. She also holds a faculty appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Jennifer enjoys translating science into images that people can easily understand. Martin Raff received his MD from McGill University and is emeritus professor of biology at the Medical Research Council Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology at University College London. He is a foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences. Alexander Johnson received his PhD from Harvard University and is a professor of microbiology and immunology at the University of California, San Francisco. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences. The concept of Cell Biology is more or less modern, and is defined as the study of the life of cells. The origin of this discipline is to be found in two different disciplines: histology and cytology. In all living cells, genetic information flows from DNA to RNA (transcription) and from RNA to protein (translation). together these processes are known as gene expression. The Endoplasmic Reticulum, Golgi Apparatus, and Lysosomes Are Part of an Extensive Endomembrane System in Eukaryotic Cells The transmission electron microscope (TEM) is in principle similar to a light microscope, but it uses a beam of electrons instead of a beam of light, and magnetic coils to focus the beam instead of glass lenses. The TEM has a useful magnification of up to a million-fold and with biological specimens can resolve details as small as about 2 nm.

Dennis Bray received his PhD from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is currently an active emeritus professor at University of Cambridge. In 2006 he was awarded the Microsoft European Science Award. The mass of an atom or a molecule is generally specified in daltons, one dalton being an atomic mass unit approximately equal to the mass of a hydrogen atom. With the idea of allowing you to have easy and free access to this compendium of publications, we have chosen all of them in PDF format. This blog is written for readers who missed out on the textbook version of “Essential Cell Biology,” a freshman level biology course by Bruce Alberts, a world-renowned cell biologist and former president of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. This book is not meant to replace the textbook but rather serves as an additional resource for students who wish to understand the important principles of cell biology at a deeper level. This book is ideal for students taking an introductory cell or molecular biology course, yet is also suitable for individuals looking to simply refresh their understanding of some of the basics of cell biology.
