About this deal

Pentax PC35AF and Fujifilm Superia 400. Inverted automatically in VueScan. A mix of indoor and outdoor lighting with a reasonably accurate colour reproduction. Superia colours. I followed that up with using it in daylight, albeit cloudy, with a visit to a local Sunday market a few days later. It was a bit of challenge in the brighter light, but it gave me a chance to try it out. In 2017 came the final nail in the coffin, Fujifilm discontinued Natura 1600. To show its popularity, there was even a change.org petition to try and save the film. Film Specifics McGee, Jim. Fujifilm Natura (Superia) 1600 - Need for Colour Speed Fujifilm Natura (Superia) 1600 - Need for Colour Speed

This was a really interesting comparison for me. Fuji Superia does have quite a lot going for it, much more than I gave it credit for. Forget the ordinary, make the world extraordinary with this special edition Lomo’Instant Automat Camera with lenses featuring a colorful illustration by Hong Kong artist, Vivian Ho! Estimated to ship-out in December 2022 for the EU and the US!

With Fuji c200 skin tones seem to be brighter or have more luminosity than other films. The magentas are quite saturated, and in the highlights and midtones the pallet leans magenta in general. This film is also very punchy or contrasty. As I mentioned, the shadows have a lot of green in them and, to my eye, they don’t look particularly good when underexposed or when you try to recover in post. This film seems to do best when exposed for the shadows and maybe even shot at 100 rather than 200. As far as grain goes, to me it’s surprisingly noisy for a 200 speed film. And as far as sharpness, it feels a bit muddy, not really a particularly crisp film. But the strength of c200 is in its latitude, which is very wide. It is able to be overexposed up to three stops and underexposed one stop before you’ll start to see problems. Agreed. Was my immediate reaction to the picture of the man with the gun, cringing and and thinking “bad taste”. YES. I’ve actually mistakenly shot with this film on a trip to the dragon in 2017. Only film Walmart had left and the CVS in DC had the same. It was all expired as well but I didn’t care. I shot it on my Nikon F5/50MM 1.8E Content contributor - become a part of the world’s biggest film and alternative photography community blog. All our Contributors have an ad-free experience for life. The film has a medium contrast and saturation, although in many shots the colors came out to be quite muted when scanned. Superia X-TRA 400 has generally cooler tones than Kodak, with more of a focus on blue highlights.

The Superia is best used outside, where if exposed correctly shows a very fine grain, however, the film does cope very well indoors too although grain will begin to creep up. Sharpness is generally fantastic when used with a high-quality lens.Fujifilm Superia 200, 400, 800, and 1600 were used with the Hexar AF, the Leica CL, the Nikon F90, the Pentax 67 (yes, I’ve played with some of it in 120).
