Chapman was arrested in Scotland and charged with blowing up the safe of the headquarters of the Edinburgh Co-operative Society. Let out on bail, he fled to Jersey in the Channel Islands, where he unsuccessfully attempted to continue his criminal career. Chapman had been dining with his lover and future fiancée Betty Farmer at the Hotel de la Plage immediately before his arrest and, when he saw plain-clothes police coming to arrest him for crimes on the mainland, made a spectacular exit through the dining room window (which was shut at the time). Later that same night he committed a slapdash burglary for which he had to immediately begin serving two years in a Jersey prison, which, ironically, spared him at least 14 more years' imprisonment in a mainland prison afterwards. In September 1944, following a scare that Pujol was about to be exposed as a British double agent, it was decided that he should go to ground, although his network continued to provide misleading information to the Germans. Donaldson's brutal murder was widely condemned but initially was not claimed by any group. Suspicion fell on the republican movement due to Donaldson’s status as a high-profile informant. An Garda Siochana have continued to investigate the killing and charged a man with murder in 2019, but no one has ever been successfully prosecuted.

Major Solms was the alias of Johannes Travaglio, a German major in Division 1 (Air Reconnaissance) of the Abwehr in Munich, the head of which was a close collaborator and friend of Admiral Wilhelm Canaris. [13] [14] In April 1943, the body was dropped into the sea from a Royal Navy submarine and then floated towards the coast of Spain. Aged 17, Chapman joined the Second Battalion of the Coldstream Guards, where his duties included guarding the Tower of London. [1] [2] Chapman enjoyed the perks of the uniform, but soon became bored with his duties. After nine months in the army, having been granted six days of leave, he ran away with a girl he met in Soho. After two months the army caught up with him, and he was arrested and sentenced to 84 days in Aldershot military prison. On release, Chapman received a dishonourable discharge from the army. [3] When they were finally published in 1957, Her Majesty's Stationery Office released a statement. It read, in part:During interrogation by MI5, then 27-year-old Chapman reportedly said his German spymaster -- referred to by Chapman as "Dr. Graumann" -- had promised to take him to a Nazi rally as a reward for completing his first British mission and would place him in the first or second row, near Hitler. a b Smith, Michael. ZigZag, a womaniser and thief who double-crossed the Nazis, The Daily Telegraph, 5 July 2001. This would be all over the world — photographs of Wallis and Edward with Hitler," historian Jane Ridley says in the documentary. "This would be acutely embarrassing and unacceptable [to the royal family]." Moran, Christopher (2013). Classified: Secrecy and the State in Modern Britain. Cambridge University Press. p.266. The German Commander-in-Chief, Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt, was one of those taken in, even to the extent of overruling a proposal from General Erwin Rommel that his divisions should move from the Pas de Calais to assist the defence in Normandy. As the Official History of British Intelligence in WW2 comments, their "intervention in the Normandy battle really might have tipped the balance". It's written in German, but the translation reads, 'To the Führer and [Chancellor], the Duchess of Windsor and I would like to thank you sincerely. Our trip through Germany has made a great impression on us. Many thanks to you for the wonderful time that we had with you at the Obersalzberg," Andrew Lownie, author of Traitor King: The Scandalous Exile of the Duke & Duchess of Windsor, says in the film . It is a priority for CBC to create products that are accessible to all in Canada including people with visual, hearing, motor and cognitive challenges. The Germans accepted this claim, the culmination of Operation FORTITUDE, as accurate. It deceived them so completely that throughout July and August, they kept two armoured divisions and 19 infantry divisions in the Pas de Calais in anticipation of an invasion. This gave the Allies precious time to establish their bridgehead. Reed, Nicholas (2011). My Father, the Man Who Never Was: Ronnie Reed, The Life and Times of an MI5 Officer, pp. 60–92. Folkestone: Lilburne Press. ISBN 978-1-901167-21-4.Denis Donaldson was murdered on April 4 2006. Gunmen broke into his home in the early hours of the morning armed with a shotgun. Donaldson was shot from point-blank range. His right hand had been almost completely destroyed by the blast, seemingly as he moved to shield himself. The following are profiles of three of GARBO's fictitious agents. They are examples of what intelligence operatives call "legends" - a cover story designed to fool the target into believing the bona fides of an agent. In this case, GARBO went one step further by creating completely fictitious agents. Chapman, Betty; Bonewitz, Dr. Ronald L. (2013). Mrs Zigzag: The Extraordinary Life of a Secret Agent's Wife. In his 2005 admission, Donaldson said he was recruited in the 1980s after "compromising myself during a vulnerable time in my life".
