The strength and determination shone through and it was wonderful to read about how her life was effectively saved when she found out she was pregnant with Michael. I loved the parts of the book where Michael spoke about the love and protectiveness he feels towards his mum, and about how they as a family talk about James everyday. How she met and fell in love with Stuart is wonderful too. Denise has said she doesn’t want James to be remembered as a murdered child but to be remembered for the happy and loving boy that he was, and that’s certainly what I have taken from this book. The love she has for James, her family, her children and her husband just shines through throughout the whole book and I feel incredibly happy that she has been able to achieve this within her life after such a tragedy. Despite not knowing Denise personally it’s hard not to be affected by something like this that happened so close to home. ‬ Pidd, Helen (23 July 2010). That same afternoon, James Bulger, from Kirkby, went with his mother, Denise, to the New Strand Shopping Centre. Whilst inside the A.R. Tym's butcher's shop on the lower floor of the centre at around 15:40, Denise, who had let go of her son's hand to pay for her shopping, realised that her son was missing. [4] [12] Thompson and Venables had approached James Bulger, took him by the hand, and led him out of the shopping centre. [13] [14] The moment was caught on CCTV at 15:42. [15] [16] On 23 November 2017, it was reported that Venables had again been recalled to prison for possession of child sexual abuse imagery. The Ministry of Justice declined to comment on the reports. [127] On 5 January 2018, Venables was charged with unspecified offences relating to indecent images of children. [128] On 7 February, Venables pleaded guilty to possession of indecent images of children for a second time. He pleaded guilty via video link to three charges of making indecent images of children, and one of possessing a "paedophile manual", that included advice for would-be child molesters, including instructions on child grooming and evading detection. [129] He admitted being in possession of 392 category A, 148 category B, and 630 category C child sexual abuse images, and was sentenced to three years and four months in prison. In September 2020, he was denied parole. [130] His next parole hearing is scheduled to take place in November 2023. [131] 2019 legal challenge to lift anonymity refused [ edit ] In September 1999, Bulger's parents appealed to the European Court of Human Rights but failed to persuade the court that a victim of a crime has the right to be involved in determining the sentence of the perpetrator. [9] [61] The European Court case led to the new Lord Chief Justice, Lord Woolf, reviewing the minimum sentence. In October 2000, he recommended the tariff be reduced from ten to eight years, [9] adding that Her Majesty's Young Offender Institution was a "corrosive atmosphere" for the juveniles. [62] How anyone can justify what was done to James is beyond belief, and the way the two boys seem to have been treated by the 'legal' system since is the same. Shortly after the trial, and after the judge had recommended a minimum sentence of eight years, Lord Taylor of Gosforth, the Lord Chief Justice, recommended that the two boys should serve a minimum of ten years, [9] which would have made them eligible for release in February 2003 at the age of 20. The editors of The Sun handed a petition bearing nearly 280,000 signatures to Michael Howard, the Home Secretary, in a bid to increase the time spent by both boys in custody. [48] This campaign was successful, and Howard announced in July 1994 that the boys would be kept in custody for a minimum of fifteen years, [48] [49] meaning that they would not be considered for release until February 2008, by which time they would be 25 years old. [9]

Reading this book broke my heart. I had to put the book down on a few occasions to gather myself. I was very young when this happened but I remember his name and my mum being even more protective as a result. James would have turned 31 later this month, and his birthday revives unanswerable questions for her. Pavia, Will (8 March 2010). " 'It was like my son had been taken again' ". The Times. London. But it is also deeply moving and inspirational and shows the strength of character and resolve that Denise possesses in her determination to finally get true justice for her baby son.

You watch your own kids as they’re getting older. At the age of 10? Everyone knows what they’re doing at that age. You know right from wrong. I can’t understand people who say ‘they were only 10’.” Many of us remember the gruesome murder of 2-year old James Bulger ... inflicted by two 10-year-old boys. His murder devastated not only his parents, but his extended family. James' father has written this book for many reasons, but especially to share with all of us just what a special little boy James was, and how much he meant to him. Osley, Richard (4 July 2013).
