About this deal

But like I said, this is a horror and those elements are good. So if that's what you're after, which I assume you are, Herbert delivers in that area. However, there are far, far, far superior horror novels out there.

Creed (1990) DLS Reviews - Creed (1990)

The pattern was to be repeated time and again: he scared the living daylights out of readers with books such as The Dark, The Magic Cottage, Haunted and Creed. The ending is very good and I found my heart racing at the end of this novel. I can only think of very few books that have been able to do that to me.

My main negative about the story is that I don't think that the author ever wrote a convincing sex scene. One here wasn't as laughably bad as some written by (mostly) male authors but it also wasn't something that I could recommend about his writing. Reading this is like playing xenophobic bingo! If a stereotype exists, it's used. The Polish man is a devious cannibal, the swarthy American man is dull-witted, the "Arabs" are gay terrorists who kill men after raping them, and kill women to look at their "secret places" (that's the actual phrasing from the book).

Creed by James Herbert

James Herbert, one of the UK's most popular novelists and writer of bestselling horror books including The Rats, The Fog and The Survivor, has died at his home in Sussex aged 69. Ah, Creed. It is a book filled with the usual Herbert charm… and yet somehow it falls short therefore preventing it from earning a spot in my top three Herbert books.

for murder and the mutilation of children. Creed eventually discovers his antagonists are the Fallen Angels of Europe, whose origins can be traced to Biblical sources. Their powers are waning, the centuries and I loved the creepiness, there are a lot of disturbing scenes in the book. I found three books by Herbert at Goodwill and read all three in a row. Creed was the last, and the one I enjoyed the most by far. The other ones "Haunted" and "The Magical Cottage" were kind of .. quaint. Not much happened for most of it, and when it did. It was so dated and Haunted House-like that it didn't really disturb or creep me out that much. I still enjoyed the books, but not like Creed. The plot may be nothing new by today's standards but for the time I'm sure it was a pretty fresh concept and I enjoyed it immensely.
