About this deal

The tape on the boat, buoy and jetty was removed and the painting re-sketched and finished. The yellow buoy was painted with a mix of cadmium yellow. This was left to dry and a stronger tone was added on the right-hand side along with a few ripples in the lake. Masking fluid is used in art, but especially in watercolors, to create contrasting white areas. The masking fluid is applied, then painted over, and finally removed. The paint is not absorbed or does not flow in these covered areas. Once the masking fluid is removed, it leaves the white paper exposed and is perfect for creating highlights and other effects.

Make sure that you allow the paint to properly dry before you remove the masking fluid. If you don’t do this, you can smear the paint over your white area. Candle wax can be applied at any stage in a painting to create texture or retain the light to a scene. If you are using masking fluid to cover a previously painted area you must make sure that you have allowed the paint to properly dry before applying liquid masking fluid.TIP: If you wash the brush with soapy water, prior to dipping it into masking fluid, you will be able to remove dried masking fluid. This was left to dry before some of the tape was removed on the boat and the masking fluid in the lake was rubbed off gently. More ripples were painted in darker tones, especially under the boat.

Good quality watercolor paper seems to work better in conjunction with masking fluid. This is probably because watercolor paper has a coating of protective sizing which prevents too much moisture from being absorbed by the paper. If you use soft velvety paper you will probably rip it when the masking fluid is removed. Masking Fluid. Also known as Drawing Gum or Liquid Frisket. Mine does contain Latex, so if you’re sensitive, you may want to look for a Latex-free option. I know Jerry’s Artarama ( https://www.jerrysartarama.com/) carries the Latex-free version of the brand I currently use (Pebeo). Of course you can always use white gouache on top of watercolor, or paint with white acrylic on top of acrylic or watercolor, but you are loosingthat transparency effect that is so unique tothesemedia. This is any kind of bottle with a nozzle at the tip for squeezing out the frisket. It sounds like a good idea for applying the liquid with precision but I have not had great experience with this method. I much prefer having one of the above tools which I feel gives me much more control.Charlene Lewis has been working for artincontext.org since the relaunch in 2020. She is an experienced writer and mainly focuses on the topics of color theory, painting and drawing.

The few places where masking fluid had not covered the bird completely were lifted off with a damp brush and kitchen roll. I left others on the branch to help with its texture. The formerly protected area was now ready for painting.

All right. Maybe just a few up here. All right. I'll set those both aside, dry them off, and then I'll float a little bit color out on there and show you what, how it repels the masking fluid and then how to take it off or how to remove it. You can use an old brush to apply the fluid as it will ruina good one, however, I prefer to use a Colour Shaper angle chisel, No. 0, firm. This has a grey rubber pointed tip, looking rather like a brush. When finished, leave the masking fluid to dry on the Colour Shaper and then rub it off.
