Description

Swat It" is a high energy fly swatter game that kids ask to play again and again. Whatever you want to practice with your child, be it number recognition, number sense, math facts, letters, sight words, or reading skills you can do it with this game. All you need is a fly swatter and some Post-its. We love how versatile this game is since the rules can be adjusted based on age, skill level, and number of players. We also love that it can be played by older kids since it can include multiplication, division, and even square roots. This game is perfect for upper elementary or even middle school since younger students may struggle with the concept of making exact change. We love that it teaches a real-life skill while also enforcing basic math concepts.

Swat! A Fly Swatter Game for the Classroom - The Teacher Bag

Sight Word Swat is a Learning Resources game designed to help children learn to read commonly used words by sight. Area of Play Multiple Ways to Play: Designed for 1-4 players, these smart games for kids comes with many ways to play and learn—compete head-to-head, or boost with solo play!My students enjoyed the game. I expected to have problems with my students trying to swat each other instead of the board, but they were rather well-behaved. And, I expected my high school students to take the swatting process rather seriously. But, it was like they were moving in slow-motion while selecting their answer. They would gently lay the fly swatter on the board. If they had been trying to actually kill a fly, the fly would have been long gone… Create a spacious area for children to swat flies. You can use the walls or the floor based on your preference.

What should I do if they don't know the answer? When my eldest was looking for a number she didn't know, I would call out clues initially like what it was next to or if it was higher or lower. This would help her narrow her focus, preventing visual overwhelm and guide her to find it on her own. After playing a few times, she felt more confident and we did a lightning round. When I look at a linear equation, I immediately try to classify it. My students don’t have this intuition. The fact that we need to do this is something I should have taught them. Next year, I will know this from experience and will do better! Swat, Learn, and Win!: Kids grab a swatter, add or subtract, and swat their way to new kindergarten math skills every time they play these fast-paced math games for kids! Deceptively Educational offers many printable games that help students practice math facts and other math skills. I especially realized this when helping students with test corrections. I learned how to do test corrections from my cooperating teacher at the middle school level during my student teaching. He set up test corrections in such a way that students had to think through the problems they missed. They had to actually discuss math. Then, they have to express either their mistake or what they have learned in writing. And, the results were priceless. The group set-up for test corrections actually hasn’t worked as well for me in my classroom since I have such small classes. Usually, I love, love, love my small class sizes. But, this is one activity where it is better to have twenty-five or thirty students in a room.Everyone knows that children learn best through play. This is why the Fly Swatter Game and similar variations have become so popular across classrooms nationwide. Continue reading to discover the Fly Swatter Game rules and instructions. Plus, the biggest piece of advice I can give you about using interactive notebooks is to give the students opportunities to use them. The more they use them and see them as helpful, the more likely they will be to use them in the future. This wasn’t just a game. It was practice at using our notes.

Fly Swatter Game: Rules and How to Play | Group Games 101

Think Scrabble but with numbers instead of letters! Players take turns making crossword-style equations and then adding up their totals based on their tiles played. After the competitors would slap the answer, I would let the class declare who the winner was. They would often start describing to the class easy ways they had figured out to determine what form a function was in. Win! Math Swatter is a fun, educational game based around tapping the fly that holds the correct answer to the given equation. Players are given a set amount of lives, one of which is taken away upon the selection of an incorrect answer. Game obstacles include hornets and spiders, both of which appear as the game progresses. Times Tales is a story-based program that helps kids learn their upper times tables. It’s a visual, right-brain approach that provides kids with a “memory peg” that makes it easier to recall multiplication facts. The set I’ve linked to includes the Times Tales DVD, Workbook, Mini Storybook, and a USB with printables. There are also other sets available. Proof! is a math card game that makes practicing multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction fun. Players race to find equations hidden among nine number cards on the table. The game rules can be modified for solo play and for kids of all ages and levels.

This game has won numerous awards and has been included on several best-of lists. We love that the game will prove challenging even for teens since strategies can range from simple to complex. Search YouTube for math facts and skip counting songs. Catchy songs can help kids with the memorization process. The Fly Swatter Game is easy to make on your own using basic materials found around the house, such as index cards, a marker, and fly swatters for each player. Teach number sense- In this game, kids are working on more than just number identification. Call out more difficult math clues to get them really thinking. An alternative variation includes calling out individual words for each player to make the game less competitive.Be sure to add in some items that your child has already mastered so they won’t get burnt out searching for only ones they don't know. We want kids to have success and fun while exposing them to new numbers, letters, words, etc. Spread the fly cards out onto a table and say, “Swat the fly with the word _______________.” The first person to swat the correct fly gets the fly. The person with the most flies collected is the winner! Made of nontoxic, solid wood, this Montessori-style game will stand the test of time. Toddlers will love using the pegs to work on counting and number recognition while slightly older kids can use the boards for beginning math. All you need to do is add high-frequency words, letters of the alphabet, or even math facts to your fly cards. I laminate mine first. Then, I use a dry-erase marker to write on the fly cards. The freebie below is editable, so you can type in what you wish. I am always looking for new ways to practice high-frequency words. They can really be challenging for some kids to learn. We have many hands-on ways to practice sight words individually in our centers each week, but sometimes I like to change it up in my small groups. That is when a fly swatter can come in handy.
