About this deal

The vast majority of motorcycles use a chain to carry drive from the output of the gearbox to the rear wheel. Sure, there are shaft-driven bikes – notably BMWs – as well as belt-driven examples but the humble chain is by far the easiest and most reliable when it comes to moving torque to the rear wheel. I tried the long straightedge method (one guy used long flourescent light tubes), the string method ( SportRyder's Wheel Alignment Method), and the chain alignment tool method (see the MotionPro tool) . The first two are an incredible pain in the rear, and the alignment tools are difficult to visually assess if you're getting the chain truly aligned. Furthermore, the string and straightedge methods simply aren't practical on my bike -- and others -- because either the side stand or the center stand get in the way. There are several types of chain depending on the design of the links themselves and there are also different types of links that are designed to allow the chain to be replaced.

Lose The Tool: Chain Alignment By Sight This tool from Laser will be invaluable when it comes to compressing the ends of a new chain together to slot the new link in. It sits inside two links and tightens by hand to bring the links close enough together so that the new link can be inserted into the open ends of each. This is another process that you may be able to achieve using normal pliers or by hand but again, it’s the right tool for the job and acts as a third hand – always useful in the garage or the workshop. Older people who are reasonable, good-tempered, and gracious will bear aging well. Those who are mean-spirited and irritable will be unhappy at every period of their lives. Great bit of kit. Together with the chain monkey makes adjusting the chain on my 2009 GSXR-1000 literally a 30 sec job, and no guess work!”– Rob

There are various motorcycle chain tools available to help you work on your own bike chain, ranging from DIY handheld devices to heavier-duty versions aimed more at professionals. We’ve put together a list of some of the best and most useful whatever your level. When the front wheel is pointing straight ahead, use a tape measure placed near the outer end of the rods to measure the distance from one rod to the other. When they're the same, your wheels are aligned. You're actually measuring the parallelism of the front and rear axles, but if the front wheel is in fact aligned with the long axis of the bike frame it's the same thing as measuring the alignment of the front and rear wheels. It is very accurate When I was aligning my Kawasaki Zx10r's chain there was a point in the rotation where it wouldn't align. Upon further investigation there was a problem in the wheel hub. This problem couldn't be felt while riding and was only discovered because of the accuracy of this little tool.Ensure laser is pointing at the floor. Place the two batteries provided in the space behind the laser. Negative terminal of batteries to connect with laser spring. The laser light is visible in a line over the entire chain length and enables a simple and fast visualisation. For belt drive, two belt markings (included in the scope of delivery) are attached to the toothed belt. The SE-CAT-Line is ingeniously suitable for this application, because both belt markings can be illuminated at the same time and thus it is visible if the rear wheel axle is correctly positioned. Laser Monkey’s revolutionary, patented and simple design makes it easy for new riders and experienced mechanics alike to effectively use. If I were looking for a parallel point on the bike then I would look at the swing arm pivot bolt, not the front axle.

Step 3: Point the laser at the furthest visible part of the chain or belt by the engine. This will now show whether your wheel is correctly aligned. Poor road conditions, hitting an object (such as a nasty pothole) and excessive tyre wear are just a few examples of how rear wheels can become misaligned, and manually adjusting this each time can be incredibly time-consuming. Find a road without any crown or side pitch (I know, that's difficult in itself) and get up to speed, at least 30-35 MPH--and let go of the bars. If your bike runs straight and you don't have to use body lean to keep the bike running in a line, you're tire is prolly as straight as it needs to be.
