The shoe has a soft, generously padded tongue (10.1 mm!) while there’s also a really nice padding in the heel.The outsole is a decoupled pattern, copying the more premium Pegasus 38. This design gave good tread, smooth heel-to-toe transitions, and was flexible enough to remain comfortable. For a combination of price, weight, and breathability you’ll struggle to beat the Downshifter 10 right now.

For me, the Downshifter will remain a shoe for casual wear and for the odd shorter run on warmer days. It’s extremely affordable, has a cool style, a grippy outsole, and can do a little of everything for the entry-level or beginner runner.

This version of the Downshifter is the 10th iteration of the entry level, cushioned running shoe from Nike. Costs are kept down with a minimalist design and low cost materials on the upper, and unnamed foam in the sole. The only downside of these was they gathered lots of mud and grass on a run and were quite difficult to get clean. I’d recommend the Downshifter 11 for anyone looking to run their first 5km, 10km, or even half marathon. If you’re new to training and want to use this in the gym too it’s a great shoe for that. In the next version I’d love to see a few more features on the upper to improve breathability, and perhaps some longer laces. Get this Nike shoe if you are just starting out your running journey, and you don’t need or want more premium models for your workouts. It’s also a great choice simply as a friendly and very comfortable sneaker, to wear for everyday life. The shoe is low cost, so I can’t really determine if it will last a long time, but the outsole is super hard at 88.5HC (average outsoles are just 80.5HC) so it should wear slowly, but where this may break down is in the upper if it’s manufactured poorly.
