This book is a hidden treasure! I loved this book when I was growing up. The book tells the classic story of putting a teddy bear in the loft, forgetting it for many years and re-discovering it. The Naughty Cats— the main antagonists. Five toy cats who cause a lot of trouble for Ruby, Blue and Blanket but Blanket knows how to get them to behave themselves. This is really a beautiful childrens book. Breakfast was forgotten as soon as this book arrived and I really couldn't get my son away from it! Old bear is a fictional children’s story where toys come to life! Brown bear had a strange feeling that his friend old bear had been forgotten after being placed in the attic. He decides that they shall all go on a mission to rescue friend old bear down from the attic. Several attempts are made before Rabbit and little bear realise that they can rescue old bear by flying in a toy helicopter up to the attic. They are successful in doing this and Old bear is found and reunited with his friends. As a child growing up in Norfolk, Jane developed a love for writing and drawing. Her holidays were spent wandering fields and lanes, conjuring up fantastical worlds with pencil and sketchbook. When she wasn’t doing this she would spend days at a time sitting in her favorite tree, reading the likes of Arthur Ransome and Enid Blyton. This is a great story of toy friends working together to rescue the teddy bear abandoned in the attic.

The beautifully drawn illustrations are fantastic; Hissey manages to effectively capture texture and detail in the toys that the drawings look like photographs. All pictures have an element of darkness to them, which I think symbolises the overall theme of the book. When I was a child I remember feeling quite scared when my parents were reading the story to me, because the pictures seemed dull and gloomy and I thought the toys looked scary! Whilst it is not my all-time favourite childhood read I can still recall all the details of this one meaning it certainly left a lasting impression upon my young mind.

The story is sweet and well-told, but the illustrations--oh, those illustrations!--they're absolutely gorgeous. A note at the end says it might take her a year to produce a book, because of the quality of the illustrations, and I believe it. Stun-ning, and absolutely apt for this charmer of a tale. Simply beautiful! I have loved the Old Bear books since I first read them as a child and it is great to see them being re-released for a new generation. This collection contains five wonderful stories complete with gorgeous illustrations.
