About this deal

Bartlett, Neil (18 March 2023). "Man-Eating Typewriter by Richard Milward review – homage to 60s gay counterculture". The Guardian. ISSN 0261-3077 . Retrieved 2 August 2023. Ellen Peirson-Hagger: The novel’s language and outlandish goings-on make it an incredibly fun read. What is the role of humour and pleasure in literature, and is there enough of it?

Richard has just been shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize and we're delighted to be collaborating on this Special Edition t-shirt. One for the dreamers. It was one of six novels shortlisted for the 2023 Goldsmiths Prize. [5] Bibliography [ edit ] Novels [ edit ]Longtime collaborators with Richard’s publisher White Rabbit, 1 of 100 have worked with all manner of innovative musicians, illustrators, artists, fashionistas, DJs, misfits and anyone else with a story to tell. Climate neutral, using low impact 100% organic cotton, and hand-printed in small editions, their T-shirts are a joy inside and out. Not at all. It was a brilliant mix of people and a time of real togetherness but I hid my writing like a secret vice. A big catalyst was reading the anthology Children of Albion Rovers when I was 11 or 12. It had Irvine Welsh, Alan Warner and Laura Hird. That book and Trainspotting revealed to me that you could write whatever you wanted, however you wanted. I started writing and sent stuff to Canongate because they’d published Children of Albion Rovers and they sent a really positive rejection quite soon after, saying: “There’s no way you’re 12! Keep going.” My English teacher read it out to the class but from that point on, kids being kids, other kids would come up to me saying: “Oh, have you written any novels recently?” It did make me very private about my writing. I wasn’t writing to impress people and that’s the same now; I want my books to do well but I don’t want fame. I’d prefer to vanish and for the books to exist on their own.

Man-Eating Typewriterhas been shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize 2023, alongside Amy Arnold’s Lori & Joe, Kate Briggs’ The Long Form, H. Gareth Gavin’s Never Was, Benjamin Myers’ Cuddy and Adam Thirlwell’s The Future Future. The judges for this year’s prize are Tom Lee, Maddie Mortimer, Helen Oyeyemi and Ellen Peirson-Hagger. artists and writers respond to the music of Mogwai with a vivid collection of texts and mixed media combining essays, poems, painting, drawing, photos, assemblage, installation and graphic illustration. The result is a fascinating portrait as playful and mischievous as the band itself.

In this extraordinary technical feat, Richard Milward plunges us into the dizzying landscape of 1960’s London with the story of Raymond Novak, an anarchist promising to commit the crime of the century, and the publishers hoping to capitalize on his violence.
