Description

In the original story, the Blue Fairy has no role in Pinocchio coming to life: his own wood was already magical and capable of speaking and moving. She still retains her role of giving him a human body. Side note: I ended up illustrating a Norwegian fairytale called "East of the Sun, West of the Moon" and you can see my illustrations here.) A fairy tale about the sons of two widows that were on a quest to save the king’s daughters from the possession of the Red Etin, a horrible monster. The Story of Prince Ahmed and the Fairy Paribanou, Part I the ~moral~ of this one is supposed to be that self-love prevents you from loving others, because Hyacinth had a huge nose and was always told that was hot as hell and was cursed not to be happy until he realized it wasn't, but i think a better moral is that beauty standards are stupid. I think I prefer my fairy tales shorter and to the point - some of these that went on too long seemed like they were ending the moral point and focus of the story, but then instead kept going with a new story in one, so that it got kind of old.The Princess and the Frog: Tiana • Louis • Ray • Dr. Facilier • Almost There Tiana • Prince Naveen • Platinum Tiana • Charlotte La Bouff i think we can all agree that this is one of the most overrated fairytales of all time. which is a bummer, because normally the idea of a grandmother-eating wolf vs a little girl is very compelling.

the movie adaptation of Thumbelina where she gets kidnapped by that toad also contributed to my childhood barbies-getting-kidnapped habit. so.

Some stories are better than others, but mostly good. I was pleased to recognise some of the stories that I remembered from my childhood and that I had forgotten (Toads and Diamonds, Trusty John, The story of the prince Ahmed and the Fairy Paribanou). These are free on ebook, so definitely take advantage of the opportunity to read some of the seminal fairy tales that are much beloved by kids and former kids.

The beautiful illustrations and magical tales captivated the minds of children and adults alike. The success of the first book allowed Lang and Leonore to carry on their research and in 1890 they published The Red Fairy Book, which drew on even more sources and had a much larger print run. Between 1889 and 1910 they published twelve collections of fairy tales, each with a different coloured binding, with a total of 437 stories collected, edited and translated. The books are credited with reviving interest in folklore, but more importantly for Lang, they revolutionised the Victorian view of fairy tales - inspiring generations of parents to begin reading them to children once more.
