To make the filling, start by measuring the brown sugar, salt and water into a small saucepan. Place the pan on a stove and turn on medium heat and mix to dissolve the brown sugar. Sanna is a wife and mother of three, living in Canada. Her passion for baking, making good food and writing sparked her desire to start Woman Scribbles. Sift and measure icing sugar into a glass or jar. I prefer to use my measuring glass with a small spout as it is easier to pour the glaze onto the coconut rolls later. Grease and line with parchment paper a 13” x 9” rectangular baking pan. Arrange the coconut rolls into the pan in a single layer, keeping them about at least 1-inch apart. Brush the remaining melted butter on top of the rolls, and let rest at room temperature for 30 minutes as they will continue to rise.

Can you see the rolls have risen and are now touching each other. That means they're ready for the oven! When spreading the filling, make sure to leave 1-2 inches free on the edges; otherwise, you will have a mess to clean when rolling up into a log. Dried fruit: Although there’s already dates in the energy balls, you can also add raisins, apricots, coconut or cranberries. I would recommend chopping them up finely or blending in the food processor. And if you are adding more dried fruit, it helps to balance out the sweetness with something salty or bland like more nuts, oat, almond meal or unsweetened protein powder. Traditionally Salara is made with freshly grated dry coconut—desiccated coconut. This however takes a lot of effort and patience. A specific grater is also needed to grate the coconut. Thankfully, using store-bought sweetened coconut flakes is a great substitute. You can use it as is or pulse it in a food processor to make it more fine and similar to the freshly grated option. If you do not intend to use the dough within 24 hours, as soon as it is mixed, wrap it tightly in cling wrap and place it in the freezer. Remove it from the freezer at least 24 hours before using and thaw it in the fridge. When ready to use, remove the cling wrap, place it in a bowl, and let the dough proof in a warm temperature until double in size. Remove from the bowl, knead, roll and fill with the coconut filling and bake as usual. If you are using a store-bought refrigerated crescent roll dough, try to roll out the dough on a floured surface as a whole as you can and then mend the pieces together forming a rectangle. Follow the same directions to fill it, roll it up into a log, cut, and brush with melted butter. There will be no need to wait for 30 minutes because they will not rise! In fact, you will save more than 90 minutes because you won’t prepare the dough from scratch and wait to rise it two times.

Light, fluffy, soft, vanilla custard filled buns. Eat these sweet bread buns warm or cold, I like them just from the oven! Freezer friendly too To make strips out of the topping, you can either put it in a piping bag and pipe them on top of the buns or if your mixture turns out to be stiffer, roll small portionsinto strips against a floured surface. In addition, do not confuse our coconut bread rolls with the Samoan Pani Popo which is smaller, less sweet, and has no filling. It looks like more a sweet bun than a roll. I think you could. Baking powder would be my suggestion (self raising flour is a mixture of flour and baking powder). Let me know how it goes! Add powdered sugar into a jar. Pour in the coconut milk and stir until the glaze is smooth. This glaze will crust, so it is important not to make it too much in advance.Roll each strip to form a spiral rolled dough. Place onto a 2 lightly greased baking sheets. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with sugar crystals if using. In fact, our coconut roll recipe is quite different. You can either make the dough for these yeast sweet bread rolls from scratch or use a store-bought one for crescent rolls like you would do to make semi-homemade cinnamon rolls, cutting down the prep time a lot. ALOHA BREAD! I made the recipe super easy for you, the rolls are sweet, soft, and oh yes..... they even say Aloha when you bite into them!
