Except that that isn't how this book went at all. It did start off with a bang (no pun intended), but from there it just kept getting better and better. The character development at no point overwhelmed the pace, but rather added to it. For example, at one point I thought a character was irredeemably stupid - but by the end it turned out that there was an extremely good reason. And the twists - oh boy - did they ever keep coming. And unlike the Jason Kolarich series, I did not see most of them coming at all. Especially since the real Canterbury Tales does include interesting female characters! Wife of Bath, anyone! Because it’s very hard to write, probably. But in the end, the principles are the same. You are processing facts and trying to guess the outcome—only this time, the outcome is how the story began, and how each new fact will change what you thought you already knew. I wanted to challenge myself. I wanted to challenge the reader. I wanted to challenge convention. I wanted to give readers something that they have never seen before. How many mystery writers, these days, can say that? Can you begin a novel with your climax and still have a surprising twist at the end/beginning? Ellis can, and does, in this well-crafted thriller.”

Company of Liars by Karen Maitland | Waterstones

The author knows Middle Ages well, there are references to real places and customs, also, her settings are usually shabby and gritty, which adds to the atmosphere. Guest Author: Karen Maitland on Inspirations & Influences | The Book Smugglers August 13, 2012 at 2:57 am We had taken her for granted until she was no longer there, like an ancient tree you don't truly see until it is felled, and then only from the empty space in the sky do you suddenly grasp its stature.”I'd say its common enough to apply modern feelings to a character in popular Historical fiction. Whats the bathhouse issue. I can't remember if there was a bathhouse in the book but it would be reasonably fair if there was as England was peppered with them.

Home is the place you return to when you have finally lost your soul. Home is the place where life is born, not the place of your birth, but the place where you seek rebirth. When you no longer have to remember which tale of your own past is true and which is an invention, when you know that you are an invention, then is the time to seek out your home. Perhaps only when you have come to understand that can you finally reach home.” In this extraordinary novel, Karen Maitland delivers a dazzling reinterpretation of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales—an ingenious alchemy of history, mystery, and powerful human drama. I would end by saying that this book had a lot going for it but it was not followed upon. Most of the twists were something that I had already figured out, so it held no mystery for me. Neither was the writing so great that I could write reams on it. All in all, a disappointment for me. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone but if you feel like taking a dip into these waters, please do so. Who knows, you might end up liking it, as tastes always differ. When a murderer their victim's corpse the wounds open and bleed again to show everyone who the murderer is. That means that one of you must have murdered him, doesn't it?” A Company of Liars is the story of a group of nine strangers who travel together in an effort to escape the plague that is spreading death throughout England. It is not simply a story about travelers or pestilence, however, it is also a story about darkness, superstition, secrets and guilt. Each of the travelers has a secret, and it is the interpersonal relationships and the unraveling of those secrets that keep the reader enthralled. There was a new king and his name was pestilence. And he had created a new law - thou shalt do anything to survive.”
