About this deal

After reading this memoir I'm planning on watching more of her movies...I'll probably give Thelma & Louise another try as well.

she has this air around her that is not aggressive, but assertive. (i guess this is where her politeness lies.) she gets the job done! Another special skill for your résumé. So much of the arc of the book is about how you learned boldness and bravery from your characters before feeling like they were qualities you possessed in life. What was an early example of that? When she finally got the chance to meet with director Ridley Scott, Davis says she poured her heart out about why she absolutely had to be Louise. After listening intently, he asked her: In other words, you wouldn't play Thelma? In 1998, Davis started dating Iranian-American craniofacial plastic surgeon Reza Jarrahy, [64] and allegedly married him on September 1, 2001. [65] They have three children: a daughter born April 2002, and fraternal twin sons born May 2004. [66] [67] In May 2018, Jarrahy filed for divorce from Davis, listing their date of separation as November 15, 2017. [68] Davis responded by filing a petition in which she claimed that she and Jarrahy were never legally married. [65] Their divorce became final in December 2021. They agreed to change the last names of their two sons from "Davis-Jarrahy" to "Jarrahy". [69] Activism [ edit ] Geena Davis in April 2011 with Dr. John Gallin at the National Institute of Health to discuss the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media. You talked about these childhood superstitions and phobias, but there was a specific situation that was very traumatic during your adolescence: being molested by a man on your paper route. How did you handle reliving that experience while writing the book? And she has long advocated for inclusion and equal representation of women in the entertainment industry — including by founding the nonprofit Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, which won the prestigious Governors Award at last month's Emmys. This memoir by Academy Award— and Golden Globe—winning actress Davis is a great single-day read that's hard to put down, the story of a life that's warm, real, and not plastic. Most readers will likely finish the book in one sitting, loving it all the way. There are moments of over-cuteness in the telling, but overall, Davis writes with authenticity—like someone readers would like to know. The tales she tells of her life on screen, from the 1982 film Tootsie through TV's Commander in Chief, are captivating. Thelma and Louise looms large in it: Davis says that it was on this set that she learned to speak up for herself in the film industry, damping down her ingrained New England self-effacement. (No surprise that Davis's role model, then and now, is Thelma and Louise costar Susan Sarandon.) Davis is generous in writing about past and present friends, colleagues, and romantic partners, and she speaks up eloquently for gender equity in movie and TV production, a cause that has occupied her in recent years. VERDICT For admirers of Davis, film, or anyone who believes women deserve an equal voice in their industry. In particular, her take on the appeal of Thelma and Louise is spot on. —David Keymer Library Journal About the Author: Geena Davis is an American actor, advocate for gender equality, executive producer, and former model. She is the recipient of an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award, in addition to nominations for a British Academy Film Award and a Primetime Emmy Award.

inessential takeaway: probably never considered this previously, but I think I now know why Geena Davis is mostly unfamiliar to fans of independent features (i.e. the filmmaking era — post-classical cinema — she thrived through). Joe Brown (July 3, 1992). " 'A League of Their Own' (PG)". The Washington Post . Retrieved December 24, 2015. i found her stories about women in movies/media to be very thought-provoking. i didn’t realize how far we’ve come in how we promote women on the screen, and i also didn’t realize how much media impacts huge life decisions. in 2015, women in archery shot up by 105%, the year that both brave and hunger games came out. one of the few STEM fields that pretty equally represents women is forensic science (they call this the CSI effect). it’s wild media can have this type of impact!!!With saucy self-deprecation, robust glee, and touch of goofiness, Davis recounts behind-the-scenes anecdotes from her award-winning film and TV career with a dishiness that only thinly veils the underlying message of empowerment and commitment that enabled her own journey to women’s advocacy for gender equality and opportunity off- and on screen . . . . Davis' memoir will be hot, given its dual draw of Hollywood tales and urgently needed gender-rights advocacy." — Booklist Arts and Media/Movies/Big Box Office Loss". November 27, 2005. I’m sorry you had to go through that. There’s advice Dustin Hoffman gave you during the making of Tootsie for how to stave off sexual advances: To say, “Oh, I would love to—you’re very attractive—but I wouldn’t want to ruin the sexual tension between us.” Have you ever passed it on to anyone else? She says that experience stayed with her, and that Sarandon "had the largest impact on my life of anyone that I've known." Geena Davis attends the Emmy Awards in Sept. 2022. This month, she spoke with NPR's Morning Edition about her movie career and upcoming memoir.Dying of Politeness may seem like a weird title but once you read this book, the title makes perfect sense. Geena Davis is the nicest person I've probably ever read about. Even when she's telling stories that she thinks don't paint her the best light, I still only saw her kindness....Also Bill Murray really is a terrible person.

Saturn Awards | 1996". Los Angeles Times. Archived from the original on October 17, 2006 . Retrieved October 26, 2021. WELL, I am usually not a big fan of memoirs, yet this one caught my eye and so I started it. Even though I started it with a negative mindset, I have to say that I soon changed my mind. I really, really enjoyed this. Ms. Davis has always been one of my favorite actors, she is just so freakin' cute! I think about that, too. It really is mostly women. Like Anjelica Huston I think of sometimes. She’s a genius. Where is she in movies? Michelle Pfeiffer, too. She’s been in some good things [recently], but it’s always seemed just tragic to me. I have a theory about why it happens. I think many male screenwriters put a female character in if they need to—a girlfriend or a daughter or whatever—and then, when they’re casting all the other roles in their minds, the go-to is always male. And so the really cool parts for people in their forties, fifties, sixties, seventies, whatever, always go to men. It’s not fair, because they get to soldier on and have ever-younger co-stars. I always say, “Go through and figure out who could be female, or who could be a person of color, and change the first name.” I said at one point to my agent, “Can we find out what Liam Neeson is turning down and go for those parts?” I’m definitely not interested in ever getting married. I mean, it would just be ridiculous. Or maybe I should really go for it, go for like eight marriages Weinraub, Bernard (March 7, 2001). "A Star Vehicle Sputters: CBS Cancels 'Bette' ".
