As with all G-series cameras the GF3 offers the full compliment of ‘PASM’ shooting modes alongside the usual range of Scene modes. The GF3 also sports the same iAuto mode seen on the G3 that, while fully automatic, does allow you to take control of depth-of-field, exposure compensation and white balance using simple on-screen prompts.

As if this wasn’t enough, Panasonic has proudly declared the GF3 to be both 17% smaller and 15% lighter than its predecessor – the already quite small GF2. Indeed, Panasonic even claims that the GF3 is the “world’s smallest and lightest interchangeable lens camera body with a built-in flash”.The mechanical button for the pop-up flash has also been retained, although its position changed somewhat along with that of the flash itself. The top-mounted controls - including the shutter release, movie record button, power switch and dedicated intelligent Auto button - have been reshuffled and grouped more tightly together, but otherwise remain essentially the same both in appearance and functionality. The GF2's stereo microphones have given way to a more modest monaural mic. When you operate the zoom, the zoom will stop at positions corresponding to predetermined distances. The GF3 builds on the Autofocus capabilities of the GF2, which proved itself both fast and capable. Panasonic has both increased the response speed of the contrast-detect AF system and expanded it to cover the whole of the sensor area. In use, it feels at least as fast as some DSLRs and for anyone moving up from a compact it will feel like a massive improvement. The touch screen can of course be used to set the focus area and this provides great opportunities for manual focus pulling while shooting video – see below for an example of this in use. There’s also a new Pinpoint AF mode, ideally suited to tripod-based shooting, which provides a magnified view allowing you to precisely position the focus point. Looking at sample images it looks to me that the GF3 has less noise at higher ISO settings. I actually think the JPG colors on the GF3 are the best than Panasonic has ever done. They are very pleasing and require considerably less post processing than any of their other cameras. No, they are not Oly colors, but they are really quite good. The centre of gravity was designed to make the GF3 manoeuvrable and safe even under the most demanding conditions.

The AF point can be selected with a press of the finger on the screen and, with the exception of the 23-Area AF option, the active AF area extends right to the edges of the image frame. Exposure modesI had this camera for a short period of time but took two trips with it: one to Avila Beach (near Monterey) and another trip to Disneyland in Anaheim. I had it paired with the Panasonic 20mm f 1.7. I was really impressed by how well the image quality turned out and how sharp the images were, too. I have owned several m4/3 cameras (Olympus EPL1, Olympus EPL6, Panasonic GX1) and this combo (GF3 + 20mm) outperformed them. I absolutely regret getting rid of both the camera and lens. The native 16 PIN (12VHPWR) PCIe connector of GF3 1000W can deliver up to 600W for PCIe 5.0 graphics cards. By far the biggest change in terms of GF3 handling is the omission of the thumb push-wheel. I really missed this control: using the A and S modes and program shifting in P mode is just a little less natural when you have to shift your thumb down to the control wheel. To be fair, the GF3’s touch screen reduces the need for physical buttons and it isn’t the only manufacturer to simplify the control layout. It’s also interesting that both Olympus and Sony have reserved touch screens for their higher-end ILC models – the E-P3 and NEX-5N, opting for customisable buttons on the entry-level E-PL3 and NEX-C3 instead. Personally, I love buttons, but I think Panasonic has got the right idea and a simplified button layout with functions migrated to the touch-screen will appeal more to the market the GF3 is aimed at. This being said, given that Panasonic's chief rivals (Olympus and Sony) have either released or at least talked about producing a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera targeted to the enthusiast market, we wouldn't be surprised if Panasonic has similar plans. One could even argue that in positioning the GF3 so unambiguously as an upgrade for compact camera users, Panasonic creates a gap in its G-series lineup waiting to be filled by just such a camera.
