Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of risk factors, including high blood sugar, high blood triglycerides, low HDL (good) cholesterol levels, and excess body fat. These factors can increase the risk of developing conditions such as heart disease and diabetes ( 19). Similarly, a 2015 review of five studies found that hibiscus tea decreased systolic and diastolic blood pressure by an average of 7.58 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) and 3.53 mmHg, respectively ( 7). There are many varieties grown in tropical and subtropical regions around the world but the best known for its medicinal and culinary application is the roselle hibiscus ( Hibiscus sabdariffa) which can be consumed entirely.

Test-tube studies suggest that compounds in hibiscus have antioxidant properties and can scavenge free radicals. However, it’s unclear whether the compounds would function the same way in humans, so more research is needed on the topic ( 9, 10).
