The Philips Hue Signe gradient floor lamp is another example of Hue’s great design and smart home savvy, brought to life in a way that can light up any room, either as a standalone device or as part of a chorus of Hue accessories. Simplistic and minimalist; just how I like it. The power cable could do with not facing the LED rod, though, so it doesn't get in the way

There is plenty to love about the Philips Hue Signe. From the get-go, it is super simple to use and set up. It comes ready to plug in and use and will turn on as soon as you fire the plug into the outlet. There’s no hassle and no messing around, which is excellent, as the smart home can often be a minefield of confusing setups and connections. Almost exactly one month ago I introduced you to the large Hue Gradient Signe floor lamp, today I would like to take a look at the small model together with you. How does the Philips Hue Gradient Signe table lamp perform in everyday life and what are the changes compared to the previous model? The Signe floor lamp is controlled with the Philips Hue app. That means if you've got Hue lights already, the Signe is super simple to drop into your existing rooms and automations. I've been using mine in the bedroom, where I have it set to mimic the sunrise each morning — an increasingly useful feature as the actual sunrise creeps later and later into the day. It's got a dedicated sunrise lighting style, which uses shades of blue, orange, and yellow to give the impression of the morning sky at dawn. But with enough fiddling, you could set the Signe to turn on to any combination of colors at whatever time you please. Taking it out of the box, I was really blown away by the strength and quality of the design of the Signe. Our oak model has a lovely wood-toned, circular base and an otherwise-aluminum construction. It’s incredibly solid and well-built, with no blemishes or wonkiness. Hue might be the most expensive smart lighting brand on the market, but there’s no denying you’re getting premium build quality at the very least. The best thing about being connected through the Bridge, to my home Wi-Fi, is that I could control the Signe from anywhere in the house or even while away from home. So although a bit more involved than connecting via Bluetooth, it was totally worth the effort.

The Philips Hue Gradient Signe Floor Lamp is similar to the Govee Lyra Floor Lamp, in that both are floor-standing lamps with gradient light strips in them. While the Govee options needed some assembling, and the finish wasn’t great, the Philips Hue Gradient Signe Floor Lamp comes pre-assembled in its box. It's time for a little cheering up. Even though the new Philips Hue Gradient Signe so far only allows the selection of three segments instead of the promised five segments in Ambiance mode, the colour gradients just look fantastic. Of course, this is a matter of personal taste, but I really like the new possibilities.

Really, though, as anyone who has used/got any sort of Philips Hue lighting will know, this paperwork isn't really needed. To get this lamp working I simply plugged it in, opened the Philips Hue app on my smartphone, and then selected the add new lights option. I then created a Zone containing all my regular office lights and the Signe Floor Lamp and used my Hue Tap Dial Switch to control all of the lights and scenes. Zombie movies are one of the most iconic staples of the horror genre, there are plenty of good ones but a whole host that should've stayed dead. Having used the similar but considerably less expensive Govee Lyra lamp, which ships in segments you have to assemble yourself, I was pleased to see the Signe arrives in one ready-to-go piece. That saves the hassle of having to put the thing together and makes for a sleeker look without any visible seams — both appreciated touches at this price point. Overall, it feels sturdy and not like it's liable to break if you happen to tip it over. And, in the smart lighting market, there is one brand that sits atop the rest – Philips Hue. As we note in our Philips Hue review, it is the "most comprehensive smart light range out there, covering bulbs, lamps, and strip lighting to suit almost every need". This is something that not only annoys me about the Gradient Signe, but also about many other products. Although the Play Lightbar and the HDMI Sync Box now have a power supply unit with three connectors, it is simply not powerful enough. In my opinion, a solution with USB-C would be really modern and flexible.
