While character arcs may be fictionalized, some details of Pain Hustlers were too wild to make up. The filmmakers pulled from the facts documented in Hughes’ article (and later, the 2022 book that expanded upon his reporting). One scene in particular, a memorable rap performed by Pete at a pharmaceutical conference, has its roots in a real video created by Insys Therapeutics.

My experience seeing this movie was my main takeaway. I'm a self-professed film geek. Often when I head to the pictures I'm flying solo because my One Sixty cohort Shane is busy or finding like minded film fans is hard to come by where live. It's not uncommon to see a few other guys watching the film by themselves as well. What I saw during Hustlers was sort of unprecedented out in the 'burbs where I live (at least in my experience). I saw many women, by themselves, in the cinema seeking this film. Young and old alike.In Pain Hustlers, those workaday reps would be represented by a team of salespeople at the fictional Zanna Therapeutics company, fronted by Liza and Pete. “We gave Wells license to create his own unique version of people,” Yates said. “And Liza was our invention, a single mum with a daughter struggling with health issues, a dreamer, undervalued but incredibly capable.”

The disc presents a 3840 x 2160p resolution image utilising the theatrical release's original aspect ratio of widescreen 2.39:1. It uses 10-bit video depth, a Wide Colour Gamut (WCG) and High Dynamic Range (HDR), and is encoded using the HEVC (H.265) codec. Hustlersis certainly a surprise gem from 2019, defying its rather ineffective promotional campaign and riding high on critical reverence which is - for the most part - well deserved. Despite questionable morality at play, it's still a superb shot at Scorsese-esque storytelling only, refreshingly, female driven (and Lopez is an absolute hurricane in this, as her character repeatedly reminds us), and not in a manufactured-for-Hollywood Oceans/ Ghostbusters kind of way. Indeed, it makes for a very effective companion-piece to his amoral Wolf of Wall Street - it'll maybe even take the edge off some of the more questionable behaviour on display here if you watch it imagining the scumbags from Wolf are finally getting their comeuppance. It is based on the 2022 book Pain Hustlers: Crime and Punishment at an Opioid Startup by journalist Evan Hughes who penned the book after initially writing about the topic in a 2018 investigative article for the New York Times Magazine.

It's no great mystery that movies are made, at least marketed, with men/boys in mind. Great inroads have been made in changing the opinion that they are solely for men and Hustlers seems like a huge leap forward in defeating this stigma. Whilst I was watching the movie the sense that this movie wasn't trying to appeal to my more basic man-brain became increasingly apparent. The movie wasn't exploitive of its female cast. It told the story as it was, it didn't fantasise. Δείχνει το πάθος και ταυτίζεται με τον ρόλο της, που διόλου εύκολος δεν είναι, με την μυστηριώδη, πολυδιάστατη και αντιφατική ηρωίδα που έχει να ενσαρκώσει, προσδίδοντας έναν ακομπλεξάριστο ερωτισμό που πηγάζει από μέσα της με μία απλή φυσικότητα και πειστικότητα. Από την άλλη, υπερκαλύπτει την κατά τα άλλα πρωταγωνίστρια στο όλο στόρι την Κόνστανς Γου που ωχριά δίπλα της, ειδικά στις κοινές τους σκηνές, αν και αποτυπώνει πειστικά τη συναισθηματική πορεία της ηρωίδας που υποδύεται, ενώ και οι δευτερεύουσες εμφανίσεις που μπαίνουν ως guest παρέχουν λίγη από τη λάμψη, την αύρα και την προσωπικότητά τους, που χρειάζεται το έργο για να κλείσει το team. 8/10!!!
